Have you tried the Alpha Pads on the TH900s yet?  I'm waiting on your impressions before I buy a pair.

I have own these two headphones LCD 3 and Fostex TH 900

Easy to drive :
Fostex TH 900 is better than LCD 3

LCD 3 need more power to get the potential SQ

LCD 3 is much better than LCD 2 rev 3 in every way .

SQ with my tube pre amp T +A P10.2:
Source : April music Stello 500

High :
Fostex TH 900 : more extended and more detail high than my LCD 3
LCD 3 : is smoother high than my Fostex TH 900

Mid :
Fostex TH 900 : more forward , it is not recessed mid , the mid is not harsh or grainy
LCD 3 : a bit smoother mid and fuller mid than my Fostex TH 900

Bass :
Fostex TH 900 : has better bass impact and faster bass speed than my LCD 3
LCD 3 : has more deep bass than my Fostex TH 900

Soundstage :
Fostex TH 900 : has slightly wider and taller than my LCD 3
LCD 3 : has more deep than my Fostex TH 900

Separation :
Fostex TH 900 and LCD 3 has at the same separation , Fostex has slightly better separation.

Black background :
LCD 3 has more black background than my Fostex TH 900

Wearing comfort :
Fostex TH 900 is better than my LCD 3

Conculsion :
Fostex TH 900 has slightly better wow factor if we first listening to each other .
These two headphones have their own character
That's why I keep these of two best headphones on the market

Suggestion for burn in :
Try to burn in with proper desktop amp and source
You will get the max SQ from these 2 headphones
It is better than you burn in only with portable amps.

All are my IMO

Most likely wishful thinking.  The mids on the TH900 are a bit recessed.  The mids on the W3000anvs are to die for..  The TH900s wins on just about everything else.

IMO of course..

I would agree with your assessment too Darryl. Overall, I prefer the TH-900's presentation (likely why I have them still and no longer own the W3000s).

Do you notice on your TH900s the vocals have a bit of high-end grain to them? Did it ever diminish over time? This is something I also noticed with the HD800s when I tried them.

It's just not a sound my ears agree with.

Sounds like I would  like the LCD3s though.

audeze are the most grain free headphones i've heard. just so smooth and clean sounding. i found the th 900s to be slightly grainy, but not as bad as d7000, which i sold due to the grainy sibilant treble, despite the awesome mids and bass.

Happy to report my TH900s are starting to calm a bit. Seems like it will take some time to fully calm though:

Yeah, definitely. Highs calm down a lot and so does the upper bass and vocals are more fleshed out. It takes a few months of normal use.
Actually, they seem to sound better at each session after 20 minutes of playing.

Just as a public service announcement. Headroom is selling the TH900's for $1,499.00 with free shipping. I just ordered a pair, but since I'm impatient went for next day air. So, I hope to have them by Friday and complete my LCD-3, HD800, TH900 trifecta! :)

Good price, I paid more, and just a week ago they had a B-Stock one priced at like $1700.

^^^ Sweet DSG!! I know I'm excited, and glad to see someone will share that excitement with me! The LCD-3's are fantastic. They are particular about amps though. When I got mine I was running a BiFrost/Lyr combo and I was like "OK where's the beef?". Then I got the Stratus and I heard what the fuss was all about.

If you get all worked up tomorrow after listening to the new Fostex, PM me as I will probably want to gush over them but won't want to be too overt in a public forum.

I can only imagine how good they sound on a stratus

No reason to think they won't sound great with a WA6SE, I have no idea. I just didn't get the big deal with the Lyr/BiFrost combo. It's like everything in this hobby.
