I have the Audio Technica ATH-M50s and I'm using the Galaxy Nexus as a portable device player.

Will I be able to power these headphones with this cellphone or will I need an amp?

If the Nexus isn't a good music player, what else do you guys suggest that could play FLAC files?

If you already have both, then try it out and see if you are satisfied. If you feel that it sounds great already, then no need for an amp. If anything, a Fiio e5 or e6 are two cheap and effective amps to test if you can hear any differences.

If not loud enough, or you're maxing out the volume on your Nexus.

The M50's are very easy to drive for their size. I'm sure the E6 will be more than enough. If you have a HM101 AMP/DAC I recommend getting one for $40...
