PART 5
90's Woodie Wrap-up.

1996 to 1999 Woodie round-up!
00011.jpg

1996 - W10VTG
1997 - W10LTD
1998 - W11JPN
1999 - W100
00022.jpg

These four Audio Technica 90s woodies are entirely different from each other. Each version had a distinctive, unique design to sound in them.

000044.jpg

1996 - W10VTG
This was the pair that started it all. Suppose to be the most expensive headphone in 1996 ($3000USD) but ended up being reasonably priced ($330USD) pair.
It was warm, full, exciting, unnatural, but natural, compared to any other metallic sterile bright headphones. It has the magic touch of mids and the romantic sound of euphoria.
11247395.jpg

1997 - W10LTD
This was the second pair. They changed the look to match the sound. And that is perfectly the way to describe it. It is fresh, airly, open, detail, clean, and transparent with the hint of AT warmth. This headphone still tamed the highs, elevated the mids, and controlled the bass—a perfect refresh to the W10VTG.
11248058.jpg

1998 - W11JPN
This was the 3rd headphone. A remake of the original W10VTG. A full-bodied, warm headphone. The refinery is the highlight. This headphone is not dark but compressed in your face warmth with detail. It is almost like a delicious hot sundae ice-cream. It is hot, delicious, and cold. Very interesting. Listening to this and comparing it to the others makes this rule supreme. It is almost ‘or’ it is a world-class headphone right here!
11255097.jpg

1999 - W100
This is supposed to be the complete package. All the supposed wrongs of the past, fixed with this. This headphone is more balanced, addictive, and solid in all categories, it misses the magic of the rest thou. And losing the magic voodoo spirit makes this headphone not so special unfortunately. Even thou it somewhat classes the rest.
11254883.jpg

It is hard to say which one is the best out of the 4. However, one thing I notice is that each year leading to the 1999 model, the sound signature was slowly getting more refine and fuller sounding.

The W11JPN is just too remarkable, and the W10LTD is much more preferable, and the exciting nature of the W10VTG is what all headphones should be. The W100 just exists as the amazing lost generation.

20200614_182356.jpg
20200614_182450.jpg
20200614_182506.jpg

The craftsmanship of the W10LTD is my favorite. The letter printed wordings—the chosen wood and gloss coating.
09900.jpg

The W11JPN, with its shiny lacquer gloss and that beautifully painted “Japan” letter, screams quality
0008898.jpg

It seems like the lettering of the headphones truly is somewhat the highlights for me. I could never buy a pair with worn-out letters. It ruins the whole aesthetic design of the headphone.
20200614_183640.jpg
20200614_183644.jpg
20200614_183337.jpg
20200614_183343.jpg

The W10VTG has the original sound that not even the W11JPN could reproduce. Everyone calls the W11JPN a better-refined version of the W10VTG. Refine? Why do you need to refine the W10VTG? Because of this, the W10VTG is technically the greatest Woodie ever created.
20200614_183607.jpg

The best pair to own is most likely the W100, with its better construction and drivers and adequately tuned up a new sound signature. However, because there are three previous models before it, it is hard to go with this. The W100 supposedly be the W10LTD mass-produced version with better drivers and tuning. I disagree. The cups and sound of the W10LTD is an original stand-alone package that not even the W100 can outshine it.
20200614_183834.jpg
20200614_183838.jpg
20200614_183734.jpg

I notice that the W11JPN is a refined version of the W10VTG, and the W100 is a refined version of the W10LTD. Moreover, the word “refine” is defined as “better,” I do not see it like this at all. Instead, each pair is a unique sound signature and holds its own and completely different headphones. They share similar values and rules. Nevertheless, the soul and heart of the drivers and cups paint a whole different picture.
20200614_185744.jpg

I already ranked each Woodie. But to ranked them here and to declare a winner takes all race;

W11JPN comes in #1 (Winner!)
W10LTD comes in #2
W10VTG comes in #3
W100 comes in #4

11252091.jpg

In conclusion, the 90s woodies are remarkable. They are some of the most exceptional 90s headphones ever created!

“May the Woodies be with you.”

I wonder which woodie has the best value in terms of current market used price per performance?

I'm not a collector, but just care about sound and value.

Honestly, if you are looking for best value, as in "price per performance", there are much better options outside Audio Technica woodies.
If the current W5000 deal on Drop includes a warranty, it makes for a very good value IMO.

Like what headphones outside AT? I actually liked the sound of the few AT woodies I tried and was wondering which one is the best value.

I meant outside AT wood series, not outside AT. ATH-AD1000X and ATH-R70x are very resolving for their price :) Other than that, Drop's Sennheiser HD 6XX is probably the best value headphone out there. However these are all open-backs, and HD6XX defiantly does not have the Audio Technica house sound.

This is a closer look at each Driver side by side. Just to see if there are any differences and it does look like there are differences between each one or it seems?

I notice that W10VTG and W10LTD use the same drivers?

Furthermore, W11JPN and W100 use the same drivers?

But I notice that W100 has a silver ring around the driver?

Looking closely, you can tell they are each different? Most likely 3 different drivers the least. Or AT created 4 separate drivers for each model. With 4 different kinds of wood shapes and process, I would not be surprised if there are 4 separate drivers.

Yeah headband is a pretty big issue for me as well. I solved the weight distribution by rapping the headband in old towels to increase surface area but out of the box the double prong system is stupid for such a heavyish headphone.

Personally it really depends on how you like your headphones. Personally I was chasing after muh detail and a clean natural with good soundstage, bass that is both tight and has good decay, wonderful vocals where you can hear the natural grain of the voice and smooth trebble and pretty much the AWKT delivered on all fronts. While I still think that recommending the ATH-R70X and calling it a day would be a much better investment; I find the AWKT basically relatively cheap at 2k when the closest competitor being the verite open at 3k.

That being said currently the most value for money atm should be W5000 at 500usd from drop. Sure the mid treble roll off is steeper than I usually like but its still a wonderful headphone. The is also the issue of lack of subbass. Midbass and vocals are absolutely fantastic. Also its lighter and comes with the wing system that has better support imo.

Hmm...wow the AT woodies really hold their value well in the used market. Pretty much the only sub 500 are the w1000 series.

The W11R has the same design as the other 4 models before it. It follows the same design philosophy as the W10VTG, W10LTD and W11JPN. Only the W100 is slighty different from the 4.

20200714_185211.jpg
20200714_185415.jpg

This model has the Audio Technica symbol on top. And limited edition wording on the bottom. Almost the reverse to the W10LTD. Both models uses the black ink on the wood.

20200714_182805.jpg

The W11R went back to the left and right pieces. From thinking about this, I believe this was left over pieces from the earlier models. The W100 released in 1999 and the W11R released in 2000 and yet it seemed like the W11R model is using all the pieces from 1996 to 1998 models.

20200714_183036.jpg
20200714_183101.jpg

The cable is the same as the W11JPN.
20200714_182353.jpg

Sound:
20200714_185524.jpg

The sound is very smooth and natural. This model is called, W11R. The "R" stand for reference and it really is true about it. But I notice a more natural reference quality to this headphone compare to the rest.
20200714_183508.jpg

My pair has no treble problems at all. It actually is very smooth. A more warm, smooth reference without overwhelming coloration like the other models.

I find this having great imaging, separation, and detail. Not treble spikes, but a more correct reference type hence the name "reference".

Conclusion, this is an excellent model. An extremely interesting and important model. Not just for the sake of Audio-Technica, but headphones in general. This is a top tier candidate of being world-class headphone.

I will rank;

9.5/10
Impressive.
Excellent addition to the woodie lineup.
Legendary status.

This is the first model with a unique cup shape. It is completely different from the other 5 models. We now have 3 wood shapes.
1. W10VTG, W11JPN and W11R share the same shape.
2. W100 has a unique dome shape.
3. W1000 has a refine cut out shape.

20200715_194139.jpg

The ink is golden inked onto the cups. It is a nice touch. With a fancy "Sovereign" lettering.

20200715_195549.jpg

The ring is similar to the W100, a magnesium alloy. The other section is made out of plastic.

20200715_194435.jpg

The cables is similar to the W11JPN and W11R. It is a black braided 7 feet wire. At the end is a cherry wooden 1/4 plug. With a ink painted Sovereign written on it.

Sound:
20200715_194135.jpg

My pair is vert sweet and balance. I notice no treble spikes or un-natural flavors. I must have an excellent pair. it seems like all my pairs are excellent? I am not sure but the W1000 is superb! I thought I was going to be disappointed? But I guess not.

I do notice it has a better treble presence. And a tighter bass.

20200715_194456.jpg

Conclusion:

This is an excellent headphone showcasing that the woodies are evolving and continuing to the next path of its evolution.

I will rank this 9.3 /10
The legacy continues
Excellent addition yet again!

Really? That was super fast! it's only been 2 days?

ed:

Just check 54 sold, 650 requests, and only for 2 days?

lol, What is that?

Exactly what I was thinking! Incredibly deep discount...way shorter supply than usual...2 days and done. Something is off.
