it's a present. the only two authorized dealers here in the uk have sold out and won't get another batch till mid march.
what other active speakers could I consider on the same level or better than the A5?

Is there a dealer who sells Dynaudio or PSB? Or you could try buying Swans or Acculine from TheAudioInsider. Not sure how much shipping will be...

So annoying to try to come up with options for Britons and Canucks.

I see Audio Engine A5's are now gone or are going to £250

. At £200 i think they were good but at £250 your money will be better spent on 2nd hand separate amp and speakers or some used monitors. The UK market is great for used gear, that's where i would be putting my money.

I'm not sure if they are the best, but I have a pair and they are pretty dang good.

thanks for the suggestions. that brought me to find more good choices, but I think I'll stick with the A5 - a dealer sell them at £200 if I preorder before end of month.
If they were for me I'd get an amp. & speaker but it's a present.

the Dynaudio's seem to be a good choice SQ wise, but they're too exp.
this site GAK list some active monitors. them Tannoy's look really tempting

Tannoy is a UK brand and make good gear. See if you can swing a deal on some slightly larger woofers than the A5s. Not vital, but it would be nice to have a bit more oompa!

If you get them for £200 i think that's OK, they are going to £250 which i think could be a bad move eg.
