Wouldn't Black Sabbath be one of these bands? They didn't really realise they were creating a new way of playing rock music. Heavy metal? Of course they had help from Led Zeppelin and Hendrix, etc etc.... But they were the first to really push the envolope of what heavy metal came to be.

Do any of you know any other bands who really pushed the envolope of music and didn't really realize they were actually doing it?

Deep Purple definetely started heavy metal, not Led Z, and by far not that hendrix dude. May be good at the guitar, but his music sucks.

Everybody says Metallica is heavy metal,w ell...I guess they are, but they're more specifically Speed Metal

W.A.S.P. definetely has the metal thing down, or did...dunno if they still tour.

Judas Priest was in the original tradition too.

I was going to say NWA. Were the Byrds the first folk-rock band?
