Basshead question: which pair of cans have the strongest bass impact??
Jan 29, 2012 at 11:36 AM Post #16 of 33
XB500 is the strongest in bass, both impact and quantity wise, even leaving Beats Studios in the dust. Well TBH there's at least 3 headphones which are very close to each other: XB500, V-Moda LP2 and Audio Technica PRO700MK2. (as well as JVC HA-M5X but this one sux so don't bother). Anyway here we're talking about 14~15dB of bass boost compared to ~10dB in Beats Studios for example. The Ultrasone PRO900 peaks at 10dB or so too around the midbass region. Denon D1100 and M-Audio Q40 are another very bassy headphones which fits in-between Beats Studios/Ultrasone PRO900 and the top contenders, probably XB700 can be added there as well despite its somewhat lack of midbass punch.

Ultrasone PRO900 has decent midbass punch, possibly slightly more so than Beats but compared to the headphones above it loses out significantly in the subbass range.

Yes, It's actually my current rig right now (check out my avatar) and it's amazing!N

Nice, they seriously look cool, how does the amp change the sound? Can you describe how boomy the bass is? (sorry for the many questions haha

This might help you out a bit:

http://www.headphone.com/learning-center/build-a-graph.php?graphID%5B0%5D=2881&graphID%5B1%5D=933&graphID%5B2%5D=&graphID%5B3%5D=&graphType=0&buttonSelection=Compare+Headphones

I believe that link should show you the Pro 900 vs the D2000. Below the graph, you should see a spot to select up to 4 headphones. Choose whatever headphones you want to compare, and click compare to view their frequency response. I'll assume you can figure out how to read the graph.

Only thing I don't know is the amplitude reading and what it is.

The D2000 has about 80% of the bass of the Pro 900. The D2000 is a n all around headphone good at almost everything, while the Pro 900 is just bass cannon, good for EDM.

I disagree. Pro 900 isn't just a bass cannon, it does acoustic and rock/metal very well too.

Quick/basic explanation:
Frequency: Left side = bass, middle = middle, right = highs
Amplitude: Higher = more

This is a lot more in depth and a bit more accurate: http://www.headphone.com/learning-center/about-headphone-measurements.php

In the end, which one wins?

In amount of bass, the pro 900 wins. On the graph I linked, you can see the pro 900 starts producing a lot more bass just past 20 Hz.

Denons are bass-heavy, but they just don't compare in quantity to a lot of their competition.  The D1100 is supposed to be very mid-bass heavy, but much weaker in sub-bass.  The D5000 has very strong bass all the way down, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the Pro 900, XB-500 and others in quantity.  Quality is a different story, but I don't think that's the question being asked here.
