Best Closed Headphones under $150 (preferably on amazon.com)

Hi, I'm new to headphones and I was looking for a pair that would be good to use with mostly my Macbook Pro and my Samsung Galaxy S3. I've heard a lot of good things about the Sony MDR-7506 and the Audio Technica M50s. I just wondering if any of you guys recommended other options.

I listen to all types of music and also want the headphones to be closed and able to be worn in public without it looking insanely big.

Thanks guys!

So inconspicuous, closed and can sound good straight from a source?

Here are some old standards:

VModa M80
ATH-ES7
Phiaton MS400
ZX700 (a less bassy option)
DT770 Anniversary Ed. (Best all rounder but a little more expensive and big)

Here is a good post on newer budget headphones:

Sennheiser HD558 is close to 598.

Good marks for linearity:

It's similar to how the HD555 and HD595 were virtually identical despite the price.  I'd go HD558 any day.

I listen to a lot of jazz and blues.  The V Moda has more of a bass emphasized headphone that the Shure 440 or Sony v6.  I have all three and like all three.  the v Moda is the smallest of the 3 and works the best straight out of my ipod.  It will be very good for the blues and good for the acoustic music you mentioned.  The other 2 will be very good for the acoustic and good for the blues.  the shure will be bigger than the Sony.  I don't think you can miss on any of them,  If it my choice, it would be the Sony.  it's the least expensive and a headphone that I keep coming back to.  You might want to invest in a portable amp such as the fiio e11 with it's two position bass boost.  You can get both for under your budget. this will give you the ability to get that additional bass for the blues.

The problem with the senn. mentioned is that they are open.

Speedwheels is right.

If I were looking for an open back, I'd hit that AD900 in a second at that killer price.

RIght now im thinking of getting the 558s and modding them so i take out the back foam or the JVC HA-s500 and replacing the pads so they are over ear. since amazon doesnt ship to australia for the 558s, i can find them on ebay from a hong kong seller for $170. is that an okay price?

$170 is close to the price on sennheiserusa.com, it's $179 there. If I'm not mistaken, I think the 558 is just a new designed HD 555. You can find those for around $110 shipped. You can do the same foam mod to make them a 595 (598 is the new designed version)

Just remember that pad-swapping changes the sound (usually).  This may be for the better, but is often for the worst as pad materials / shape are factored in to the overall FR.
