Unamped: Sony MDR MA900
spent some time with these and really comes close to my hd 600 in quality sound. ma900 is warmer and laid back and big sound stage.
would be a nice transition from your m50 as i have the m50s too. a amp and dac still helps but not needed.

Amped: DT 880 or HD 600
slightly above budget both can be found at ~300 and a lot of reviews on these.

are the MA900 better in all aspects than my m50?

yes honestly i didnt like the m50s after hearing how good the ma900s are. The bass extends deep and clean its 70mm driver are one of the largest in headphones so it gives it the bass it needs in an open headphones. imagine having 2 speakers monitors near your head thats how the ma 900 Sounds after a while you forget you have headphones on. Then going back to the m50
I noticed how closed in it is the m50 has no soundstage compared with the ma900. also the most comfortable headphone i have ever used makes the m50 feel like torture.

basically bass feels like a subwoofer instead of a earbud and mids are warm and treble is smooth.

the only con is they leak sound in and out but i actually like that when i am at home.

Also since your looking at the hd5x8 series i suggest the 558 and do the simple tape remove mod to get it to sound like the 598. The 3 HD 5x8 series have the same drivers. I have the hd 518 and hd 600 and still can't get ma900 out of my head i am definately buying a set of ma900 when i sell some headphones. HD 600 and MA900 would be the only headphones I need. Its almost end game entry level headphone you are getting. :p.

To me the ma900 > HD 598.

to be honest the hd 600/650/800 are the few sennheiser phones that are worth it the hd 5xx series is in a too competive price bracket because the other guys have better stuff. Oh yeah forgot the px100ii and hd 239 but they are on ear.
