My current sound setup is ad700's paired with a xonar essence stx.
I'm looking to upgrade, and I just wanted to know what headphones would be a good upgrade for me and my soundcard could still handle well.

lets say my budget is $250 and below, but preferably less than $200 USD

thanks for any help.

Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro 250-Ohm or DT990 Pro 250-Ohm.

I read in another forum that the STX couldn't juice a dt880, is that true?

I use my DT880 Premium 600-Ohm and DT990 premium 600-Ohm with my Essence STX.
And the DT880 Pro 250-Ohm is an easier headphone to drive then the 600-Ohm headphones.

There are better headphone amplifiers then the STX's, you could sell off the STX, and by an external headphone amplifier.
but you would need something like the Xonar DX (used $55) sound card (to plug the new amplifier into) to match most of the features of the STX.

Here is a thread dedicated to the Essence STX, see what your fellow STX owners have to say.

well I'm honestly looking for mostly clarity, and from what I've seen that usually doesn't require much in terms of amps.
so would that make the dt 990 pro a good jump from the ad700's?

and I'd honestly rather not deal with selling the stx, I've had too much trouble with ebay to ever want to try that again. I think I'll just stick with the sound card I've got for now.

I own both the ATH-AD700 and DT990 Pro, I never use my AD700s anymore.
But I have no problem using the DT990 for music and movies (have not gamed in years).
