I'm just curious what the greatest headphones that have come out are. I know "greatest" is very much based on opinions but I just wanted to see what people had to say. List whatever you want, best all-around, best sound quality, best comfort, whatever!

Best sound quality amped (under $400, that's my limit): Sennheiser HD-600
Most detailed headphone: Beyer DT-880
Best comfort: Beyer DT-880 or 990
Best comfort under $150: Koss UR-55
Best sounding IEM (that i've tried): Triple Fi 10
Best "Bang for the Buck": Koss UR-55 (I'm addicted to this $50 surprise)
Best headphone under $200: Shure SRH-840
Best under $125: Audio Technica M50
Most bass: Denon D2000, M50, SRH-750DJ
Best bass for under $100: Koss UR-55

It would be the Orpheus, also known as the HE-90.

You'll also find arguments for the HE-60, R10, JH13, HD-800, HP-1000, K-1000, Omega2, Mk. 1, AD3000, and a few others.  Some "high end" headphones like the PS-1000 and Ed. 9 are more contentious.  I've never much liked either, but everyone has their own tastes.

Personally, I'm split between the HD-800 and K-1000.  I also have the O2 Mk.1 and HP-1000, which are awfully good.

Though I'll take the Quad ESL-63s over any of my headphones.  They cost less, too.

AD3000? ...Unless there's a new high-end headphone in the AD series I didn't know about, I think you mean the L3000!

Universally, I tend to be told that the HE-90 is the headphone king, but I've never heard and I haven't heard a headphone over the $1000 price range, so I'm not really qualified to answered this question!

P.S. Nice avatar, Cold Toast.

Dynamic headphones under a grand.. The NAGRA DT48S are it for me, & I have had my share of some of the best dynamic headphones for under a grand..650/SA5000/701/880/990.. Call me a fan boy or whatever..yada, yada,.. Over a grand you have serious hi fi sound.. LCD2/K1000/R10/HE90/02/4070/L3000/T1/010. Cenus seems to be the HE90/R10 are the 'best.' or the 02.

Yeah.. I need to build my uber hi end portfolio. Only headphone I auditioned that was over a grand was the K1000.. & let me tell you.. They are easily worth a grand.. When a neutral type sound wows me you know they are special.. My favorite sounding open headphone. Never heard highs so extended yet so natural.. Sureal.

Oh wow, these headphones must be amazing :O
This is the first day I've really actually looked into real headphones, FLAC, and all that stuff. It's so eye-opening. It makes me want to go to best buy :p
I'm hoping to get some new headphones, I use my current ones all the time while I'm on the computer... and I spend an unhealthy amount of time on the computer! Mostly for gaming, but I would love to hear music with nice headphones. This is all so exciting :)

Unfortunately you're very unlikely to find any headphones mentioned here at Best Buy. I've never seen any of the audiophile brands there, though I suppose some individual stores might carry the very low-end Sennheisers.

I'm surprised by the lack of R10 in this thread. By far the best in sound quality over anything I've heard.

I've gotta be frank though--from a price point, I think the Shure SRH840 is the best. Of my inventory, I prefer them many times even over my DT880, and over other headphones I've heard that cost twice as much or more.

I went to my local bestbuy today, and to my surprise they started carrying about 3 different Koss headphones, including the PortaPro's!
Didn't have any money on me, but i'm going back to pick up some Porta's.

Slow down, lurk around more, try different headphones, and don't take everything said here at face value.

Ultra-Top Tier:
Sennheiser: HE-90 (Orpheus)
Stax: Omega 2, Omega 1
Sony: R10

Top Tier:
Sennheiser: HD800
Sennheiser: HE-60
AKG: K1000
Stax: 4070
Stax: Lambda Series
Sony: 010 (Qualias)
Beyerdynamic: T1
Audeze: LCD2
Hifiman: HE-6
Audio Technica: L3000
Grado: PS1000
Grado: PS1

Extremely High Tier:
Denon: D7000
Ultrasone: Edition 8
Grado: GS1000
Grado: RS1
JVC: DX1000
Audio Technica: W5000 (though I do not like this phone)
Ultrasone: Edition 9
HifiMan: HE-5LE

Excellent Mid Fi Cans.....some actually exceeding many of the extremely high tier:
Sennheiser: HD650 / HD600 (which to me are really the same headphone give or take a different presentation here and there)
Beyerdynamic: DT880
Denon: D5000
Grado: RS2
AKG: K501

Other Mid Fi Cans.......
AKG: K701
Denon: D2000

Sennheiser HD580

That pretty much sums up the best headphones yet released.  I may have missed something, but I don't think so.

Yes there are many good ultrasones and many belong in or near the mid-fi section..............but I don't know that they are substantial enough to be counted.  I owned a Proline 750 and 650, and they were good.  I still enjoy and own my HFI 700 very much, but whereas some people (crazy as they may be) could make a case for the K701 being the greatest headphone ever made, I don't know that the Ultrasones listed above could have that case made for them.
