I got the Shure SE535, but I find my open headphones simply better. What IEM will give me a similar open headphone experience? The Shure SE846?

None really. They're quite simply different. Do you expect your bike to go as fast as your car? Different purposes. Your best bet if you stick to iems though is to get some good dynamic driver iems. They tend to be more spacious sounding than BAs.

WHat exactly were you looking for when you want an Open Headphone experience?
My experience with Open Headphones tend to make your music sound spacious or have a large soundspace...
You could posssible get particular IEM's that have good soundstage qualities

I tried the 846 once, it sounded the same as the 535 in the short time I listened to them, albeit containing more detail and greater instrument separation.

Same bass too? That's the biggest difference.

The bass seemed identical. I owned 535s for quite a while before one of them broke, the 846 sound like a heavily upgraded model in terms of detail but not in relation to the bass, mids, etc.

There is NO way the bass is identical. Do you know what filters and source you had by chance?

The source at the store was an iPod classic, have no idea what gen it was and the only song I was able to listen to was Let Down by Radiohead, which was one of the songs loaded onto the iPod, and the tips on them at the time were the standard shure silicon type. The time I listened to them wasn't ideal at all, and like I said I don't own them and have only experienced them once.

Ipod classic might explain it. The 846 is only 9 ohms. The output impedance on the ipod classic is 5 ohms right? That would mess with the sound for sure. Wonder if you had blue, black, or white filters too.

I owed the SE535-J a year and comparing then to the SE846 is crazy. With the SE846 the bass is much more impactful with either the white or blue filter and the separation and clarity is greater with all three filters.

I still love the SE535 but it connot be compared to the SE846.
