Brown Rice vs. White Rice

Jun 30, 2006 at 5:36 AM Post #16 of 47
White rice is far superior as far as taste is concerned. It's more clean tasting and provides better counterpoint for side dishes.

Brown rice can be good though. My mom mixes a little bit of brown rice to the white rice so the white rice has specs of brown rice and it's quite good actually. I think she soaks the brown rice first for a few hours so it will cook evenly with the white rice but I'm not sure. You may want to experiment.

you dont know your rice! Each rice should be cooked to suite their size, taste and texture. And if you are importing the same rice served in Japan then its the same rice? You are just not cooking it right.

I prefer brown. I like the flavor.
I eat a bowl of oatmeal every morning for brekfast and brown rice 2-3 nights a week for dinner. Supposed to be good for the heart. I have family history of high blood pressure and stroke.

As the way this threads turning out, I don't think we'll get one decent set of conclusions for Brown Rice in comparison to White Rice. It seems as everybody or different people here have experienced rice cooked different ways, and we each have our own opinions. I guess somebody here who may have a lot of rice experience may be able to comment on what each rice tastes like depending on format of cooking. If not, I supose the general consensus is that brown rice is healthier, right? Although rice in general is considered a rather healthy food in comparison to the majority of the crap out there, right?

PS, I am no rice expert, so post away on my post.

Kramer, one side of my family has similar problems.. I should eat brown rice more often I guess. I usually have it when my mom makes stir fry. I guess this is really a personal opinion thing. I hate white rice unless I dump a bucket of condiments on it, heh.

No, the rice that gets imported here from Japan, isn't the cream of the crop, it's just the average stuff. The good stuff stays in Japan. You can tell by the grain after you cook it, the rice we ate in Japan was actually glistening it wa sso shiny and smooth, the rice we get here is still shinier and has more flavor then regular medium or long grain rice, but if you saw the stuff in Japan, you'd know what I was talking about. I think the place we stayed at that had the best rice was the Imaihama Tokyu Resort, mmmmm we ate it with breakfast there every morning and it was the best rice I've ever had.

I have no clue what you're talking about because I go rice shopping (mother cant lift the bags herself).. Yeah.. you sure you're not cooking it on a cheap ricecooker set to its generic "cook rice.. any rice" setting? oh and you're supposed to clean rice and all that preparation before you cook it.

Good rice doesn't usually come in fifty pound bags, usually around five or ten lb bags. We use one of those fuzzylogic ricecooker thingamabobs and I wash the rice till the water turns clear, it's still not as good.

In my opinion, this is a good thread. I take food seriously and rice is one of the greatest foods. Great food is one of the things that contributes to a sense of happiness and good mood so a food thread is to be taken serisously, especially if there are health beneifts. Also, rice is a very big staple on this planet. Billions of people eat rice every day. It's a part of the lives for a huge portion of the planet. Rice is a huge industry. I love rice not just from Asian cultures but also from Spanish, Indian and even Italian culture as well. (yes there even Italian rice dishes too)

To me a stupid thread would be something like a thread about lighting your farts on fire, but even that's kinda interesting too.
