I need to make sure I am doing this right. System is for music only.

I have a 40 x 2 amp. It has two sets of speaker level outputs. There is no preamp our, sub out or LFE. I have two speakers recommended for 10-80 watts.

I have a powered sub with speaker level inputs. It does not have outputs.

Can I connect the two speakers in series to one channel of the amp and the sub to the other channel?

The voltage from the other channel, the one driving the amp and sub, is probably going to be too high for the SUB.  This is why a sub output or a pre-amp output is needed for a powered sub.  I vote against this option for a number of reasons, but the fact that you could damage the amp / SUB is my primary.

You should connect the speakers and sub to the same terminals.

In other words left amp speaker output -> left speaker and left speaker level sub input, right amp speaker output -> right speaker and right speaker level sub input
