Hi folks!

I've finally decided to invest in a decent ish pair of headphones.
I'm certainly no audiophile and sound clarity isn't something I'm very well versed in. I'm generally just used to toying around with large PA systems and revelling at the bass. As a result the only headphones of note I've really used were on on ear pioneer dj phones, and I definitely didn't want those on my head for anything longer than 5 minutes!

Essentially I have a budget of around £130.
Currently looking at:
AKG K272 HDs (hear the bass is pretty weak on these, not an issue as long as it isn't very weak)
Audio Technica ATH M50s
Beyerdynamic 770s.

I listen to a lot of Electronic, Dubstep, Rock, metal, acoustic and Hip Hop.
So Im looking for:
Comfort.
Durability.
Quality across all ranges.

Also looking to use these on portable device with a portable amp.

ANY advice, suggestions, recommendations etc would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry. DT770s I believe they are.
Also adding Sony XBR500s on the list as a cheap alternative (just for dub and electronic if someone can recommend another pair with good mids and highs for under £70)

How portable?

The DT 770s sound like they could be a very good choice for you, but they don't fold up like the M50s. Very comfortable. Good clarity. Solid bass output. Highs are accented. Mids are clear. If they are roughly the same price for you, I would definitely choose the 770s over the M50s. Here in the US, the M50s run a lot cheaper, in which case I think it's an equal price performance/value.

really good to know, as here in the UK they both seem to be £130. so at that price for both I should rule out the M50s? Will dig around to see if I can find a bargain for either, so thanks for that heads up.

Before I chase down some 770s, I'll just list the prices that I can currently get each set for.

DT770s are £130 ($210)
M50s are £130 ($210)
AKG K272 HDs are £90 ($135)
(conversions are approximate)

Can get very good discount on the AKGs atm

with this in mind, would anything change?

I would rule out the M50s if they are the same price, but others may disagree. I just think that the DT770s are a step up.
