The bass response is back, or maybe my ears just got used to this set. I keep hearing conflicting opinions on burn-in, but whatever happened, I'm getting more bass. The distortion at top volumes is still a bit present but a lot less than the old set. I'll keep these. They sounded great on my walk today.

I'm keeping mine, too... occasionally, I have the problem with the rattle on high volumes, but not often to bother me, and I just decrease volume in those cases.  I just love the Grado sound that much!  And like you, unlike my first experience with them, the rattle doesn't happen at low enough volumes for me to consider it a major defect.
