i plug my e17 to my comp via usb and i can only use it for listening to things on internet, when i play music through itunes, the sound comes out of the laptop built in speakers, anything i can do to make the e17 my default playback device for itunes?

Audio MIDI Setup (AMS) is in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. Open it and click on the MIDI Devices tab.

Are you using a Mac or PC?
 
I think Darkblade48's solution is for Mac OS.  For PC, you have to go to Control Panel -> Sound and then you can set your default audio device.

i use a pc and i have already done that and it works for sound played through internet but not from itunes, its really weird

Did you disable your onboard sound in addition to making the E17 your default player?  If not, try that.
