If you don't like the slightly hissing sound of the highs, I would leave the FD5 alone and instead add in your search the always excellent Hifiman RE2000 Silver which are now available at 349 dollars, very far from the 2k gold ones from which they derive and today also with a design which should make them more comfortable.
Now they are called RE2000 PRO Silver
Maybe you can add the Aful Performer 5 and 8 to your list. I have heard/own Performer5/8, IE600, FD5, FH3 and for me the both Performer are much better than the rest. The Performer5 has a bit more bass and bass rumble than the 8, but the 8 is better in everything else, plus has better more detailed and tighter bass.

Sounds like the difference between FD5 and FD7 to me.
Well, the FD5 is more V-shaped than the FD7 with more low end rumble and, depending on the track, more aggressive highs.
Though, these high can be tamed using Final E-Tips, at least for me.
Have to try the Xelastics and Spinfit W1 on them, which are great on the FD7 (Xelastic) and Kiwi Cadenza (W1).
Got mine today, Fiio has done it again and created a price/performance winner. It only took me a few minutes listening to some reference tracks and compared it with my Fiio FD7; while dynamic range is slightly lesser than my FD7 it still hits a wide range and soundstage for the price you get...it's quite remarkable for that price.
With that said, anyone who is easily sensitive in the upper range should consider this one. I've tried Crinnacle's Zero and Moondrop LAN, both of which are in similar price range, and Fiio just has a much nicer and pleasant tonality to my ear. Well done, Fiio!
I have both. Wouldn’t touch FH3 with a pole, but I was noobie when I bought it.
I wouldn’t buy FD5 in 2023. I would buy FiiO JD7 and an aftermarket cable and case instead (photo below). The left over money can be put into Monarch II. But I would recommend another odd choice to complement the JD7: Symphonium Meteor (big bass, extended treble, muted 5kHz).
Noted that I’m a “neutral with bass boost” kind of guy who values resolution and imaging the most.
FD5 still gives me a lot of satisfaction, combined with my Mojo 2 it still manages to give me emotions.
For my taste I drop 3dB on the low shelf and high shelf using the Mojo 2's EQ, to get a more neutral response.
I haven't heard the JD7 but I don't think it can match the FD5 in technicalities.

I rank the FH3 highly. That you "wouldn't touch FH3 with pole" probably means we have completely different tastes and preferences but thanks all the same for responding.
I had the Monarch MkII but they were too big for me. A shame as they are the best IEM I have heard. They didn't blow away the FH3 though and were only marginally better.
