Fostex HP-P1 Portable Amplifier and DAC for iPod/iPhone (Short REVIEW and Impressions Thread)

Thanks guys for sharing.  Looks like my Fostex HP-P1 is normal from your experience.   I am using the HP-P1 more as DAC feeding the RX-MK3, and the MK3 can lasts more than 10hrs.    Will probably get a battery pack as suggested by Lillee.

*NOTE: I havent tried this battery with my Fostex, will try later and report back.

I have a buffalo usb battery pack, seems to do the trick. I recommend finding a good balance between weight and battery power.
I have:
input 5v 500mAh
output 5v 1600mAh
total storage 5200mAh
It has two usb ports.

(JPN amazon link sorry-but info is there to help you start looking)

I only usually use it for my ipod touch on movie days when i use more battery.
5200mAh or 9600mAh would be good, more is best :)

With  the Fostex/ipod music days I usually dont need a recharge on my usual commute, and like Lillee I usually routinely charge my gear on the go or nightly.

I will try to look for one with the same form factor so i can stack them up.    something like this :

The Energizer XP4000 battery pack is the best I found for that. It's the same footprint as the iPod classic/Fostex HP-P1 rig and is slimmer than most alternatives. It also packs a heck of a charge.

Finally pulled the trigger on this unit and am expecting it tomorrow (purchased from Sweetwater). So excited! I will pair this with my new Ultimate Ears Custom Reference Monitors, and I can't wait to hear the combo. I'll report back!

Congrats! welcome to the P1 club haha

I've sent my ear impressions away yesterday for Westone ES5's, now the long 4 week (quoted) wait... *sigh*

Since my visit to SG and hearing the FitEar C435, my SE535ltds just haven't been the same
rolleyes.gif
Rolled off mids... They are technically brilliant with HP-P1 and with upgraded cables but once you hear a high end custom/universal, you can't go backwards. I also demoe'd the JH11's and they were pretty darn good and I would be happy to own them considering not top of the line, so I imagine the JH13/16/ES5's will be bliss? One thing I did realise after demoing about 18 different headphones is that I found the Fostex HP-P1 sounds great with nearly all of them, so feel solace in that fact. Ones that stood out Ultrasone Edition 8 (next headphone for sure), Denon D7000 surprised me, FitEar C435...
/end rant

Anyway XP4000 sounds/looks like the one to get?

I used ES5's with an HP-P1 and would say that it's a great combination.  I also have a pair of Fisher TF10 customs and, though they do sound pretty good, when compared directly they just don't hold a candle to the fuller range and more natural presentation of the Westone.  Also the comfort level of the Westones (made from the same molds as the Fisher) is far better for me, likely because of the softer tip material they use (the Westone molds are in two parts with the tip material that goes deepest into the ear canal being softer).  The Fishers shells are uniformly hard, and just feel a whole lot less comfortable after an hour. I can wear the ES5's for hours and experience no discomfort.

The only problem with this statement is that the ES5 makes anything sound good, even my iTouch 4.  But to support this statement above, when I had my HP-P1 I always enjoyed the sound it provided.  I only sold the HP-P1 when I got my DX100 since i don't like keeping to much redundant equipment around.  I already have to many portable phones laying around but I think I will keep these since most of the have the Moon Audio IEM Silver Dragon cable system and it is nice when others want comparisons that I can make.

I went overboard and also ordered an iBasso D7 for when I'm listening through my laptop. I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of my UERM's no matter which device I use!

It's a shame the HP-P1 doesn't also work with laptops. Did anyone ever find out why? That would make it the perfect DAC/Amp combo for any device.

Good to know, as I couldn't keep my Fishers in my ears for long either so I sold them and swore off customs. If I try them again it will be Westone.

Sorry for the OT, but does anybody else do the two-part tips?

Just got the unit. Sounds great at first listen, but I really need to spend time with it.

Right off the bat though, I'm a bit disappointed by the stock Fostex LOD-USB cable. It doesn't seem to fit snuggly into the iPhone.  I would prefer something that locks in, but I'm not expecting a dramatic improvement in sound from a higher quality cabel.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

See a page or two back, there are a few options and links.

Glad to hear ES5 is a good match for Fostex (and any player). Right now all I an do is read reviews and sit tight...
