"The housings are finished by Japanese traditional "Urushi" lacquer by a 110 years old artisan group in Japan".

Either that or someone messed up the cups and thought they'd fix them with Wite-Out.

anyone who owns a th900 probably knows how the ear cups are made - the video has been posted here a number of times. point is, even urushi lacquer can run after it has been applied. that said, it does seem unlikely that such an obvious defect would go unnoticed at the sakamoto urushi manufacturing co.

This might not be a universal problem as the picture source is from a Chinese forum thread where they claimed there were quite a few who met this issue, but seemingly it's not reported in other territories. Maybe something happened during the import process that degraded the lacquer. Just see if anyone else have seen this as well.

Could they be fakes?

Also slight update on the purple limited edition.
US companies are placing orders for them now and they're expected to start arriving in August.
The lowest price I've seen is $1800. I paid about $2000 to get mine early and should be receiving it in the next day or two.
If I end up not liking it I'll list it for what I paid. (I've never heard a TH900 before).
Here's a picture I don't think has been posted yet:

I'll take some pictures once I get it.

Horrifying pics of those PW. I do wonder if it was perhaps rejected from production but found its way out on the 'secondary' market? It seems like that kind of lacquer run would occur during the application process and would obviously be caught in QA inspection... just speculating.

Well, the laquer is extremely thin- thinner than I would like it to be. It scratches when you look at it sideways.

So my first thought was "fake" but I am no expert on Fostex.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Contemporary, alt rock, punk, folk.
I think they're better all-around headphones than they're given credit for, but they really shine with music that needs speed and slam. Hope you like them!

Heyo Aussie here looking for a new amp, and maybe a DAC to drive my TH900 Mk2 for my PC. I am currently using a DX7s Amp/DAC, it seems to have some driver issues that causes crashes in a small number of programs unless I lower the sound quality in Windows. I imagine I could probably use it in combination with any amps I get, but I want to see what people thought of this one.

My budget is 2000 Aud (I could stretch to 3000 if there is a VERY good justification, but the device would have to be an Amp/DAC combo). I have seen tube amps being recommended, but a lot of these recommendations are from old posts where it seems a lot of the recommended equipment has be discontinued with no obvious replacement. I could see in an earlier post that someone also recommended a HP8mk2. I just wanted to ask if this was a good one to get, and if there is anything else I should look for.

RME ADI-2 DAC FS is a superb DAC and the amp is more than enough good medicine for TH900s. Spend the other thousand on a more manageable cable :)
