I want to make sure they will work well for the musical styles I listen to.  I like rock, metal, pop and electronica.    

The kind of sonic character I'm looking for is punchy bass that isn't boomy, neutral mids and good clear highs.  I don't like laid back highs. Do you think these headphones are what I'm looking for?  For reference I own a pair of Sennheiser HD280's and I find the mids are way too boosted and the highs are not sparkly enough for me. Thanks

They should be a good match (in their price range).  However, you won't know for sure until you put them on your ears.
