I have collected a number of headphones over the last year and am hooked.  Of my collection, the COPs are my favorite.  I listen to a broad range of music and enjoy cans that can produce some good bass.  My next set of headphone would be a step up in terms of refinement.  I am looking for some that are a bit more detailed without sounding harsh.  I'd like to also improve upon imaging as well.  My source is usually my Macbook Pro with a FIO E17.  My price range is $200 - $400 range.  What suggestions do people have?

I did a bit more research and these are the headphones on the top of my list:
 
DT770
DT880
HE400
HD600

Keep in mind, my only amp is the FIO E17.

I think HD600 will displease you because it doesn't have a lot of bass. (That's one reason I enjoy it.) I'd recommend considering HD650 instead, but you don't want to spend that much right now.

You may  be right. If I can find them on sale they might make it to my Christmas list

The HE400s might need a better amp than the E17, even with my Fiio E12 i found that they where still not sounding their best.
 
The Schiit Magni and Modi really improved their sound over the E12.
 
so you might want to cross the HE400 off the list unless you are willing to get a better amp.
 
if you do go that rout though you will be blown away by how good they sound.

Amazon has them for 299 so if I could find a more powerful amp that ties in with my Macbook Pro for around 100, that might be a great combo for home use.

i don't know, it uses two cables (one for each channel).
 
you could get the HE400 and the Magni plus Modi as a desktop rig, then use your E17 for a portable rig.
