Ok so I emailed grado for some reccomendations on some closed headphones, this is the email, " Hello, first off I'd like to say I have been a long time fan of your headphones, and I have yet to find any headphones that are as enjoyable as yours. However, I have a slight problem. I can't take my headphones anywhere with me. Don't get me wrong they sound great and are comfy too, but I'm frustrated because these aren't at all portable because of the leakage. I was just simply wondering if you are, in the future, designing any closed headphones. If you are, or are going to, how much will they cost and will they have that grado sound signature. I'll appreciate your imput and thanks for time and consideration."
            Corny I know, but whatever. What really entrigued me was what they emailed  me back;

sorry the reason why the performance is so good is the open back design.

we are working on a closed back designed , however it is not something that will come to market soon.

AKG has some quality models that you might want to consider.

Thanks

Ok so what does that mean, hmm. I just thought it was cool that we now have proof that grado is in fact working on a closed can. Makes you kind of wonder what it would be like. Oh well just thought I should share this.

They seem to be very fond of the open sound. I'm not surprised they're working on something closed, but whether they'll like it enough to bring it to market is something else.

If they're even going as far as recommending another brand, they're really saying "Don't hold your breathe".
I doubt they'll be out in the near future. I'm expecting maybe, 4+ years.

I wonder what they would sound like. Even though I have technically better headphones than the SR80i that I had, I still miss it.

I'd love to see this!  I love my SR80's (wearing them now) but it's rare that it's quiet enough for me to use them.  I'm happy with my Ultrasones, but if Grado produces an affordable closed headphone I'll probably have to try it out.

There is a closed-back Grado, it's called the V-Moda M-80. Seriously, they're quite similar in sound signature but with better bass.

HAHA

Good one. Thats a keeper. I should use that in a comedic sense or for midnight comedy.

The vmoda m80 is the exact opposite of a grado. Boasted bass and no treble. A grado is no bass boasted treble. Complete opposites.

I own them both, I can assure you that M-80s are far from "bloated bass and no treble", and Grados do have decent 60-80Hz response. I often wonder where some people get this stuff from.

It isn't the same as actually hearing them, but if you look at Tyll's charts you can see how similar they are.

The only thing really missing is the harsh 2kHz spike from the Grados. Maybe you were thinking of the V-Moda LP2s, they have almost no real treble at all and can be rather boomy.

Are they really that similar? Which Grados do you have? Because I was actually thinking that about the sennheiser hd25, just cause I've heard they have a reputation for being rather lively sounding.

I've had the 225s, 80is, and 60is. Yeah, they are pretty similar, just with more bass. The M-80s, however, make a great headphones for going out and about because they have good isolation.

Yeah, I need some good portables to upgrade from my sr60i's. I'll definetly have to give these a shot. I found it funny when I checked out Tyll's review video on youtube the first comment I read was him recommending these over the hd25's for rock. Which I found funny because thats what most grado fans listen to.
