Well i decided to buy new driver elements for my 650 instead of buy a HD600. I think the 650 frame looks better too. Now i have both headphones technically

**the catch is the drivers arent "hand matched" like when you buy a real HD600. Hopefully i don't notice a difference.

Senn's are so easy to tear down unlike an AKG K701. I must admit the sound of the 600 is addicting. The mid end presentation doesnt sound as recessed (people hear this as the veil); it actually sounds balanced. It's much less warm than the 650. The 650 definitely sounds more refined. Im really glad i have both.

Someone screwed up and billed me for only one.

it looks the same, but they sound way different. The 650's plastic driver casing has a glossier finish. The 600 casing is flat black. you cant really see it because it's all sandwiched between the fork, earpads, and grill.

Im using balanced cables straight out of my DAC1 or i could use my stock SE 650 cable.

Thanks for the quick reply. I would like to know what you meant when you wrote,"but they sound way different". Did you mean as your new modded cans sound different then your umodded 650's or regular 600s?

i really thought the 600 and 650 were closer. They share the unmistakable Senn sound.

I think for right now i prefer my 600 hybrid sound of everything i own or heard. It has the exact sound that i was looking for all this time. I just need to burn it in before my Apache gets here next week.

I never heard or seen 600's before this; only read about them. When i learned i could buy the drivers by itself i knew it would fit right into my 650 frame.

I already own a pair of 600s and I have been flirting with the idea of buying a pair of 650s for some time now. I think I will go ahead and bite the bullet and purchase a pair . Just think, if I don't like the 650s I can always swap out the drivers and become another proud owner of one of the best looking 600s on the planet. I really appreciate your post and thanks again.

Where did you find the HD600/580 driver/elements for $35 each ($70 / pr), shipped? The price I found on the Senn site was $55 each.

I would like to know too

I got a quote yesterday > $100 per individual replacement HD580 driver from Sennheiser parts in Australia! It was cheaper to buy another whole pair of headphones as a spare instead.

Interesting. I prefer the HD650 balanced over the HD600, but I do vastly prefer the HD600 single-ended over the HD650. It's just that much more natural in tone and balanced in frequency response. It's more aggressive, more upfront, and more dynamic. The HD650 has higher speed, resolution, and better imaging, but it can only impress you with these traits in the absence of its recessed highs and bloated bass. If your amplification can reign in the HD650's negatives, then it is a world class headphone, but if it can't, then it sounds like a mess. The HD600, in the meanwhile, is good almost everywhere it goes, though it does need a very high quality amplifier to sound good. It just doesn't need a very specifically matched one like the HD650 does.

The HD600 is a better headphone but the HD650 has more high-end potential. They're both absolutely terrific in their own right, though.
