As a long-time Garrard 301 owner and enthusiast, I am wondering if there are kindred spirits out there. Anyone else using an idler drive deck, e.g. Garrard 301 & 401, Dual 1229, Lenco GL75, Thornes TD124, anything interesting from the US (Rek-O-Kut et al) or similar?

Lenco l75 in use here. Sounds great with the stock arm, although I have a replacement arm for it, I’ve been too lazy to swap it out. Will wait until cart is worn.

I have heard that the stock Lenco arm is actually rather good, once it has been recabled and fitted with a new vertical bearing.

It is. Done that with mine, new v blocks, new rca sockets at the rear, dental floss mod to stiffen up the counterweight. Bought a new arm (silver note tone arms) to drop in when I’m ready to switch.

Discovered that my cartridge has been in almost daily use for about two years. A new stylus costs the same as a new cartridge...

Just ordered an AT VM740ML. Apparently, it’s now the go-to cartridge for fixed headshell 3009s (lightweight with high compliance), and less bright than, but just as detailed as the AT 440MLb.

Do you still have it?

This is the 1973 911 2.7RS of turntables!

The 301 is more of an E-Type...

For me it's more Rolls Royce, than 911 2.7RS, especially their famous 927 and even rare beasts r80s. Unfortunately don't have it now, also as their honorable heir EMT 950 wide body.
After EMT-era for me i had more costly Linn LP12 setup with Naim Armageddon, Superline (with dedicated Supercap on it), Aro tonearm and Arkiv B catridge plus some upgrades like Tiger Paw Khan. It brings more refined hi-fi sound but something lost compairing EMT authority and power. Some day i will return EMT back.

One of the best systems I ever had the privilege to hear comprised an all-EMT front end, Croft electronics (including their OTL power amps) and some large Harbeth speakers. The EMT absolutely thrashed a Thorens TD124 with Ortofon arm and TOTL SPU head...

Many of true vintage audio fans still uses EMT with a Klangfilm speakers and amps. Don't like horns and tubes at all, but it is something special.

I also saw a very rare belt/idler wheel turntable Neumann PA2 turntable with Neuman DST62 head, but never heard it.

Here in Germany, AAA meets are generally good for that sort of thing...

Much more interesting than the big “commercial” shows.

Sorry, what you mean about AAA meets? Anonymous Audiophiles?

Neumann PA2 was on Hi-End Munich in 2016.
