John was kind enough to send me a pair of his new pads for the XTC2’s to try out. I have been using the fuzzy pads, which I love. The new ones are quite a bit thicker moving the driver further off your ear and with more volume inside the pad. The effect is not subtle in my case. It in essence lowers the noise floor with all the associated effects - more of everything to put it simply. I ordered a second pair for my other XTC2’s. Now John just needs to do a fuzzy version! 🤣 Do give them a shot - who knew pads can make such a diff. 🤷‍♂️

Are the new pads on the site?

Wow. Amazing headband pad.

Sorry, which website? Where did you get it from?
Turbulent Lab. Keep in mind not a perfect fit so a little mod required cutting to size. It also depends a little on the version of the headband you have from John. In retrospect may have been easier to just get the Audeze headband. The leather strap it comes with is nice and soft. I got the carbon version for one pair that just did not quite work as the metal part was just too thick and not flexible enough to bend to shape. I only put the new leather strap on there because I already had it. The strap the Audeze comes with is fine. See pic.

The carbon version works great if you have a big head. If in doubt get the metal version as you obviously can’t adjust the tension on the carbon version. For me the carbon version was the ultimate solution for this pair. Very happy with my other two pair just putting the new leather strap on.

I've got this one. I believe to be the same as yours.

Yes I noticed there was some DIY involved. I was thinking about ZMF pilot strap, Audeze headband and maybe now the Turbulent lab.

Thank you for the information :)

Anyone interested in building a killer system under 1000.00 I wrote an addendum to my R7 review uniting the R7 with the Schiit Midgard and HRT HD dac
It is always hugely satifying to find a headphone system that gives more than a taste of what high-end headphone listening is all about. Sounds like you found one incorporating the JM modified Hifiman R7.
