I had settled on, and had been using, Debian quite a while before switching to PC-BSD as a Beta Tester in 2005 at v0.73.

In the Summer of 2021 I revived a Thinkipaf T61 with a 100GB Lenovo HDD on it and thought Kali GNU/Linux, a Debian derivative, would be perfect for it since I wouldn't be doing a lot of work with files. Having had used Backtrack since version 5.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked using apt and the Kali rolling-update system and have used Linux more than FreeBSD the last year.

Ubuntu and SUSE. Had the pleasure of using UNIX full time from 1985 thru 2012 on every workstation that there was. Linux starting in the early 90's. PC's with M$ suck and Linux is the only thing that makes them usable.

Every now and then I write some regexps for my son in Python, better in Perl....

This thread seemed pretty active until 2017, then a few random posts from 2018 until 2022. Any of us still out there? I don't run Linux as my main desktop anymore, but still absolutely adore the platform. Curious what desktops people are using these days.

I've been using Kali GNU/Linux as a daily driver for 2 years and it's become the main OS I use, where it used to be FreeBSD. Till they committed Copyright Infringement and stole my tutorials. It's a Debian derivative, I have over 20 years experience with that and Admin it just like I would a Debian box.

Much to the chagrin of Chicken Little chickadees everywhere.

Use Ubuntu as my daily driver. I know there are other better distros but Ubuntu is so stable and simple it does what I need.

I have to admit that I an in love with the idea of both Fedora and Manjaro (and Arch), but the reality is that I need something that will work and run updates as expected and Ubuntu ends-up being the thing I most consistently go back to when I need it to "just work" after some package from Arch breaks or some non-FOSS compatibility from Fedora proves too much of a pain for me to want to work through.

KDE for life, though.

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed guy here. Using EasyEffects for an equilizer, bass enhancer, and crossfeed. Schiit stack (Modi/Loki/IEMagni). It’s all good 👍.

Yup, exactly. Nothing is more frustrating for me then when I log on and just want to do something but, oh, that's broken and a 15 minute task turns into a two hour troubleshoot.

This is a 2 year old continuous rolling upgrade from the original build of Kali 2021.3. I've never had a problem using apt for rolling updates I couldn't work through.

Check out that monster Lenovo 100GB HDD :)

I love that. I can't imagine DD'ing Kali, but that's pretty amazing that you do. I've been on Arch for 4 months and wow...love it.

I use Fedora KDE on an old POS PC for quick and safe web travels - but not for music.

As an aside my mother wrote assembler/Fortran 66 the 60's and 70's, when computers had vacuum tubes. I started with Fortran 66 and BASIC in '77, retired in '14 as a C/Perl/Python/*ix guy, my younger son is a Python/SQL programmer. 3 generations in a row, not too many families can say that.

It's exactly like running and conducting responsible Administration of a Debian box.
It's easier than maintaining a FreeBSD box and I spend less time doing it. If you can run Arch it would be a breeze...

Eons before Odin welcomed his infant son Thor to Asgard, he had a daughter named Hela, the original wielder of Mjolnir. Proving herself to be a ferocious warrior, Odin gave her the rank and title of Executioner.
