I'm in love with these headphones and would like to be able to use them around the house or in the car. Do you have any recommendations for a ~$300 portable set up? I would prefer it to be either a portable DAC/Amp + Music player or just a music player.

A dap is a music player, what do you mean? You wouldn't need a "dap + player"

Starting out, it's much cheaper to just buy a dap instead of a mobile dac. There's a few daps out there, depending on what features you want, like the phone without a phone, ipod touch 5g, no display whatsoever ipod shuffle, or hifi ibasso/fiio models.

I'm not so sure on the iPod touch or iPod shuffle's ability to power the Mad Dogs. While I am looking into some FiiO products (mainly the x3 and x5), I don't know if they can power the Mad Dogs either.

They can. Mad dogs are only 50ohms I believe? Ipod by itself may have to turn volume limit off, but high gain on fiio (I think they have that, ibasso does) would be enough.
