I can, with a sufficiently bad room, make $2000 speakers sound WAY worse than $20 earbuds...

Headphone setup for $500, go for it.

Go to a store and try beyerdynamic's T1.
After that listen to some speakers. You will see you need about $10.000 to match the sound quality of the beyer.
If you are on a budget and if you can cotton up listening with cans it's always a better bang for the buck.

No no i tryed beyerdynamic T1 i dont like it...  i will go for Hifiman HE-500, La-figaro 339, Schiit Bifrost if loudspeakers don't do great job.
