Yes Start a private message will start a private message and if you have one sent to you the send is marked post reply just like a regular thread.

"Start a Private Message" will start a private message. It means "Send."

Thanks Alex - still a little confusing. So to start a message I click "start a private message", then once I have written the message then I click "start a private message" again?

Yup. I it changes to "Post Reply" for subsequent messages.
