I have a decent sound card, soundblaster titanium fatality--will I still need an amp for something like the Q701's?

Just upgrade to the Titanium HD. The Titanium HD appears to power headphones better then previous Creative sound cards.

If the volume is loud enough with your sound card, then buying a dedicated amp is not worth it.
