aaah, now I have it! They have the old ones (dt-990 pro) for 138EUR, & I was looking at those - & yes the picture of the new ones is the same as on Meier's site. Thank you for pointing out my mistake ...

So based on the price, I guess all the talk about the new DT990 would be the top model was just empty words?

Still excited to know how they (DT880 & DT990) compare though.

This doesn't make any sence. Look at the Meier Audio's prices. DT880 is cheaper than DT990 and if thomann would sell them they'd probably be cheaper there also.

Today I auditioned new DT880 and DT990 (again) at a local hifi store and with better amp and source now. They were amped with Lehmann Black Cube Linear and source was some Denon CDP. I don't remember the model.

I must say that the differencies are just like amartignano describes them in the review of the old DT880 and DT990. To my ears DT880 was better sounding after all. It was somehow more neutral and clearer sounding. Very similar sounding than the old DT880 but I liked this new one better. Bass was slightly better present now than with the old one. It didn't sound so 'hidden' anymore. Of course the old one was amped by Corda HA1 MkII and this new one with Lehmann so that probably makes some difference.

I'm guessing you went to Kruunuradio? Hmmm, might have to stop by there. I was no huge fan of the dt880.

But it's a shame they won't have one of those custom jobs with 600ohm. I'd love love love to compare the old skool 600ohm dt990 nonpro to a new 600ohm version.

Yes I did. They have quite nice selection of headphones there nowadays.

That's interesting Patu.
Thanks!

Seems that the new DT990 are "less new" than expected.
I hope to read direct comparsion between 2003 and 2005 version one day.

from beyer USA

Hey! Maybe in a month the prices on the custom stuff will come down too! After all, they already offer that customizing site in english at the Beyer USA site...

So has anyone here tried the 32 ohm version of the dt770 yet?

Another question: how well would the 250 ohm version run out of M-Audio Audiophile USB's headphone port? I know its not the ideal source but is it enough?

Just a heads up but Thomann.de emailed me back requesting my full shipping info so they can give me a quote on the DT990. If they really are offering the new version for ~167E (about $200 US) that is a spanking deal. I'll let everyone know what I hear when I get a reply with the total cost w/shipping.

Little update:
I ordered the new DT990s a few weeks ago from Thomann.de, as expected/announced they got them just today from their distributor and sent my pair straight on its way
580smile.gif

The email specifically states "DT990 Edition 2005" - so we can be quite sure that Thomann really sells the new model for 169 EUR.
But the batch that they received today seems to be sold out already, as the new DT990 is listed now as "mittelfristig lieferbar (ca. 1-2 Wochen)". Unfortunately, that orange symbol suggests that even their distributor doesn't have it in stock, so the stated 1-2 weeks delivery time should perhaps be taken with a grain of salt.

If I'm lucky, I' be holding my new DT990s in my hands at about 9 o'clock tomorrow - which is exactly 19 hours and 24 minutes from now
