Proof of evolution—Darwin Filters V2 for HiBy RS6, RS8, RS2, FC6
Jul 22, 2023 at 11:25 AM Post #16 of 106
A successful installation would be such that the names of the "Low-pass antialiasing filter setting" filters available to choose from, in the Darwin controller pages, changes from
Default
Darwin 1
Darwin 2
Darwin 3
Darwin 4
Darwin 5
Darwin 6
Darwin 7
Darwin 8
Darwin 9
Darwin 10

to the new names similar to those given in the article above (Default: Min-delay Fast Normal, Mean-delay Fast Late... LinPhase Slow Late, NOS non-filter, NOS 1st-order interp, Darwin Ultra). As noted, the graphics for each haven't been updated yet, that would have to wait for an actual firmware release.

Thank you Joe,
for your explanation. Therewith, I am sure the installation was successful on my RS8 and I can start focusing on the sonical impacts of your filter on the music I will listen to. I am very curious. What you have created already seems to me to be a unique distinguishing feature among daps.

there is considerable difference in gain between the first nos filter and other filters. ie the volume gets higher switching from first nos to any of the others. why?
That is a technical necessity. The NOS non-filter lets through so much ultrasonics (as created by processes integral to any manner of D-A conversion, even of 44.1kHz sample rate (e.g. CD) material) that the system would overload were it not for the reduced gain for that choice. You can compensate, of course, by the turning up the volume.

As I pointed out, this is one of actually many possible implementations of NOS. A lesser seen implementation, that lets through more high frequencies, across all frequencies, than any OS filter. So it's probably not what you usually expect NOS to sound like. But it is NOS, no question about it.

Ok thanks. They do filter out some of the artefacts that were still present in earlier filters, so thanks for that -)

NOS: Non-filter
NOS: zero-order hold (not selectable in current preview filterpack)
NOS: 1st-order interp
These are all NOS approaches. The actual NOS switch is closest to zero-order hold, so I thought I'd leave this out in the preview (out of necessity, only 11 slots available). Of the two that are available, NOS: 1st-order interp is closer to the actual switch than NOS: non-filter. Also, check out Darwin Ultra :)

Yes, using one of the NOS filters with the NOS switch off would let you do this.

Regarding the behaviour of the NOS switch,

Previously, joint tunings were issued, some of which had the NOS switch on. Such presets can be regarded from the respective manufacturers as "we liked it better when the NOS switch was on, but when the NOS switch was off, we like [such Darwin settings] the most. (But we still liked NOS better)"

I have consulted with the engineers again, and as it turns out, the implementation of Darwin V2 is such that Atmosphere Enhancement and Harmonics Control are available even with the NOS switch on. So I will simply redact the part about having to choose between NOS and Darwin features in the article :p
Thank you @Joe Bloggs for clarifying. MSEB is also applied even w/NOS switched on, correct? Also, acknowledging this may be self-evident to those more knowledgeable than I, I assume that w/NOS switched on the Darwin filters are not applied, however...correct?

I appreciate all of the exciting work to improve our DAP's! Definitely HiBy for the win in this regard for customer loyalty and retention. ✌️

Yes and yes to your questions.

Hi Joe,

I apologize in advance, as this has certainly been asked somewhere before. Since I am not aware where, I would like to ask you:
Do the Darwin filters (including the Darwin_v2) affect all apps like Hiby Musik, Neutron, UAPP and Poweramp as well as Qobuz and Roon ?
Thanks !

Yes, they do. :)

This is awesome, thanks HiBy! A little late to the party but I'll give them a whirl shortly. I was just thinking about how there hadn't been an update in a bit, but also, RS8 has been rock solid and may not have needed it. :beerchug:

OK, how do you back these out? I just re-applied the 1.20 FW and the new filters are still there.

You'll need to delete the filter folder and replace it with a filter folder of the original filters. Here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j7bo90c46qyug6r/default filters.zip?dl=0

Perfect. Thank you

@Joe Bloggs
Unfortunately, that did not work. Now there is no audible change of any filter including the NOS toggle. It's one setting throughout all selections. The graphics of the OG filters disappeared, never returning.
I have replaced the filters and rebooted. Replaced the filters and filter folder and rebooted. Then I re-installed the 1.20 FW. Still no audible change. The OG filter names are back, but they don't actually do anything + no NOS function now.

ok so I heard from you in pm that the V2 pack is working as normal, all functions including NOS toggle. So we just have to figure out what might be happening to the V1 downgrade file.

edit: I cannot replicate the issue here. Can you take a screenshot of the filter folder as it appears on your RS8 when you're trying to do this?

Excellent work @Joe Bloggs ...Fantastic evolutional upgrade to an already stellar performing range of devices...

Quick question though: How do I save an update to an existing tuning style? (it complains about an already existing preset). I could of course delete the preset and save it again, but an update option would be nice to have

That would be something for the UI team to work on for the next full firmware update 😅
