I bought the ATH-M50's but returned them since they bothered the bloody hell out of my ears. I also heard about the ear pad replacement mod (use velour pads from a 770).
 
Should I repurchase along with those pads? Do they make that big of a difference? Cause the M50 pads were not deep enough for my ears and my ears were touching against the inside of the headphones.

It sounds balanced to me as if everything was perfect and it's what the producers of the music wanted me to hear. But, I'm pretty biased as these were the only 'high-end' headphones I've ever owned.

Well, what are you looking on a pair of headphones? more detail, bass, soundstage? do they need to be closed right?

I'm trying to avoid *any* colorization, would like detail; be able to hear those subtle sounds and low bass. I would very much prefer them to be closed so I can go outside with them. But, if you have any open headphone suggestions too, I will definitely consider them. I am looking to stay around the price of the ATH-M50 ($160) but am willing to spend up to $200 if necessary.

Yes, but the majority of the reviews said they were very uncomfortable. So, I have to assume that they will be.

The DT770, and especially the HFi780, are horrible suggestions if you want accurate sound.
 
The DT770 has bloated, slow bass.  The HFi780 has earbud-like (in quality) overexaggerated highs, and crappy, thumpy bass.

Maybe the DT-770 Pro 80, but not the DT-770 600 ohm.
 
The DT-770 600 I own is perhaps the most balanced sounding headphone I ever owned. Weird huh? Totally different than what one would expect.
 
But for the DT-770 Pro 80..it's a complete bass monster. I would call it bloated and not accurate at all. Doesn't mean I didn't like it!
