Saying Goodbye to a Companion
Jul 13, 2007 at 1:12 AM Post #16 of 42
Thank you for sharing. I'll bet he was much happier with you than in his past "profession." Mr. Twist will be honored in our household this evening.

My avatar (Zach) is our companion - now getting quite old but tolerant of things like having headphones put on his head for a photo. I'll bet he would have liked Mr. Twist, just couldn't keep up with him... I'm afraid that I'll be posting a goodbye by Fall as he's already outlived expectations by a couple years.

Here's to some of the best people in our lives - our PETS!!!

What a beautiful boy he was! So sorry for your loss.

It's one thing to remove a dodgy leg because the prognosis is pretty good and the dog is going to be happy it's out the way, but another when it might get all the cancer, might not, and he's not feeling so hot anyway... it's that choice we pretend we'll never have to make.

He had big kind eyes too.

The other canine family members are feeling it as much as you are, give everyone a big hug, and some tasty treats... there's an anonymous poem I'm thinking of right now, not the rainbow ridge one, but another one, but it's too sad to post and I don't think he'd want to make you anymore sad. Just know we're sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I recently lost a pet, my cat that we rescued. She had renal falure, and the vet told us she wasnt in any pain and that she had about 6 months. We were going to put her down the day asfter her birth day, but the night before heart failure took her. I think its better for it to happen at home instead of at the vet.

It's never easy decision to make. But it's always good to have a new furry family member addition. Adopted MoMo, the havanese from a rescue, my wife was devastated by the loss of Maddie, the poodle, and swore she'd never get another dog. But now they are inseparable.

This handsome boy came off the racetrack with the name Crystal Twist. We had just lost an older greyhound to hip problems. The head of the local greyhound rescue group, and a good friend, just showed up at our door with this guy.

He walked in, sniffed the other 2 dogs, and proceeded to lay down & go to sleep, 5 minutes after he walked in. We figured he knew he was home.

We shortened the name to Twist, and added variations- Mr. Twister, Twisty Bits, Twist & Shout. But most notorious was Linoleum Boy. Seems Mr. Twist was deathly afraid of linoleum. So much so that most visits to the Vet resulted in me carrying 75 lbs. of dog into the office & exam room. But funny enough, when it was time to leave, ol' Linoleum Boy could walk just fine on that slick floor.

Get me outta here!

About a month ago, Twist developed a limp. Not unusual in greyhounds as they do run & get banged up. But this one didn't go away. A trip to the Vet and our worst fears were confirmed - bone cancer in a rear leg. There were options - amputation, chemo, radiation. We looked into it, but realized we were being selfish. Months of anguish to try and prolong his life might only add 6 months to his life, and unlike a human who can understand they are suffering in attempt to get better, all he would know is that he felt like hell every day. So we elected to go the pain killer route, make him comfortable and love him till the end. We revelled in the six years we were allowed to enjoy his company, and yesterday the time came. He could no longer stand long enough to eat, couldn't get up to go outside. I got one last chance to carry him into the Vet's office. He went to sleep in our arms. That leg won't pain him anymore, and I suspect he is right now chasing a bunny or digging a hole, his favorite pasttimes.

You folks who have dogs or cats or hamsters or whatever, give them a treat in honor of Mr. Twist. He was a gentle soul wrapped in fur, and we are going to miss him terribly.

Mike

My mom had to put her two dogs down within 2 yrs. Both died from cancer.. I was a wreck when Lady was put to sleep.. I remember the vets assistant holding me as I started crying non stop.. I was in emotional hell for 2 weeks.. Its been over 2 yrs, & I'm still not over her.. I still dream about her a lot..

Whats irks me are heartless owners.. My friend took in a dog cause the original owners wanted to put it down.. It jumped in the pool too much.. Maybe they need to be put down instead..Less idiots to deal with..

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. My little Yorkie just enjoyed some of that "lamb and sugar" loaf in Mr. Twist's honor. It's never good to lose a friend, but feel content in the fact that you were there with him until the end, and his life was enriched by being a part of your home. My condolences to you, and to all dog owners to whom this day inevitably encroaches.

Mike, your post nearly moved me to tears. It's been years since I had to have a dog put to sleep but I certainly remember the sadness.

I know a greyhound from the local dog park and he's a beautiful dog. I never realized how noble and gentle they are.

You should be proud to have given Twist such a good life.
