What is the "timeline" of Sennheiser TOL headphones?

I don't even know what cans were TOL (as far as moving coil drivers) before the HD580/600/650 era.

I'd love to hear more about vintage Sennheiser headphones.

A few years ago (maybe three or four?) I remember a website listing a history of headphones for certain brands, with descriptions and specs for each model. IIRC, it was fairly extensive.

I've tried googling around to find it but to no avail, alas, alack, etc. If anyone remembers this, can you post a link? Assuming it still exists, of course. Might be helpful to the OP.

Unfortunately Sennheisr portion is not very extensive. There is some info, but not very detailed. I am working on updating it, hopefully knowledgeable folks will help out.

The links above should give you a lot of it:-

Flagships:
1966 - HD 110 - Sennheiser's first headphones
1968 - HD 414 - The world's first open headphones
1977 - Unipolar 2000 - The world's first open electrostatic headphones
1991 - Orpheus - Limited Edition of only 300
2009 - HD 800

Top of the range (newest first)
(ignoring the Orpheus as it took quite a few years for all 300 to sell, a dealer in Australia still had one new one for sale a couple of years ago)

HD 800
HD 650
HD 600 (basically the same as the 580 Jubilee)
HD 580 Jubilee (Certificated Limited Edition of 4,000 - 1995)
HD 580
HD 540 Gold
HD 540 (this is debatable as the Unipolar 2002 was still available when the 540 was released)
Unipolar 2002
Unipolar 2000
HD 414
HD 110

I don't think I have forgotten anything.

I hope this helps.

You've clearly forgotten that Stax had open electrostatic headphones from 1961, some 16 years previously and by 1977 had worked their way from that SR-1 through the SR-2, SR-3, SR-3N, SR-X, SR-X Mk.2, SR-5, SR-X Mk.3 and had developed the SR-Sigma panoramic and Koss had the open ESP-10 in the same year as the Unipolar 2000 following from their (closed) ESP-9 of about ten years previously. The difference in the ESP-10 of 1977 and the Unipolar 2000 of 1977 is that the Koss headphones still work today whereas every Unipolar 2000 I've come across is dead.

Those Stax models also pre-date the claim for the HD-414.

There is no Stax facts Mafia.

The information I posted came straight off the Sennheiser Germany website, not from me.

The HD 414 was patented as the first open headphones and Sony were the first to take out a licence from Sennheiser.

Anyway, the Stax are not headphones, they are "earspeakers"
