Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

The only time i noticed a hint of channel imbalance on mine was when i got them second hand & they had the Left/Right plugs in the wrong way.
But even on the JDS Labs The Element on high gain low volume that supposed to cause channel imbalance from the Dac/Amp it was perfectly fine!

I'll say that if there's channel imbalance on mine, it's not egregiously out of whack enough to really notice in my day-to-day listening. If I listened closely and paid attention, I might have a chance to say I'm hearing some, but I'd suspect my ears first rather than the headphone because I'm pretty sure one of my ears hears slightly better than the other.

I've read somewhere that HD600 has channel imbalance issues? Why is this? I was expecting better QC from Sennheiser.

I think I've gone though 3 of them with such imbalance which I don't notice with HD6XX

Look at even Tyll's graph

I actually had channel imbalance with my 650s a few years ago, and I found out it was because of the pads. Once I replaced them with new pads, everything sounded perfectly even. So, my guess is Tyll measured an HD 600 with uneven pads, and that’s what caused the imbalance issues. Also, if you take a look at the 580 measurements he did, it looks just as balanced as the 650.

I’ve gone ahead and tried modding my hd 600 with some dekoni sheepskin pads.

Terrible idea on my part. Yes, they bring up the bass a bit in exchange for everything else

- sound stage narrows even more than a normal hd 600.

- mid range feels sucked out a bit, almost like it’s been reduced.

- The highs remain unchanged.

Stock Hd600 pads are the way to go.

Nearing a one year with the HD600. I use them everyday, I take them to work. I'm surprised nothing has broken and they sound so good I can't imagine better ones. I'll rather remain ignorant of how some even nicer ones may sound. Only thing that is apparently lacking is that at some point the bass cuts off, but that's nauture of headphones I guess. Before I have also had HD555, PX100-II and MX685. Sennheiser seems to work for me.

The bass cut off point still bothers me somewhat. Because of that I don't listen to them much as they sound "thin" to my ears. But I understand YMMV though.

The good thing about trying different pads with the Sennheiser headphones is that they are soo easy to replace, so if the ones that you try are not giving better results, you can change them back.

If you want more/lower bass from your HD600 you could always mod them to be closed-back. A few years ago, what I done to get more bass from the HD600 I had was that I cut 2 pieces of cardboard to the shape/diameter of the inside of the grille's (1 for each grille) and fitted the pieces of cardboard against them. The pieces of cardboard fitted perfectly against the grilles and completely separated the drivers from the outside-world, basically turning the headphone in to a closed-back one. The result was that sub-bass was present and very audible. This mod did not affect the midrange or high frequencies negatively. It was definitely worth it. Although I later moved on to AKG K712 which had a bit more bass than the modded HD600.

If you really want to go to the lengths of making a HD600 closed (why?!? by the way; in the name of all that is holy?!?!) then I would advise hunting down Sennheiser own effort: the HD250 or maybe a DT150 :) (edit or DT250 which by some accounts is the nearest to a closed HD600)

What I did was to get a vintage Fisher 400 receiver and restored it (recapped, new tubes, other upgrades). The tubes filled out the sound sufficiently where as I decided to keep the HD600s.

It was just an experiment, albeit a successful one. I wanted more bass, so as to balance out the sound. Thus the reason why I done that mod. The HD600’s lack of sub-bass frustrated me, and it was why ultimately I ended up replacing it with AKG K712. I’ve also owned a Beyerdynamic DT150 but I don’t find it’s sound signature that similar to HD600. The modded closed-back HD600 I had produced a good bit more sub-bass. This might surprise you but my favourite Sennheiser is the Momentum 1.0 on-ears. I used to own the HD700 but HD700 sounded sub-par with most of my equipment. The Momentum 1.0 on-ears sounded good with everything, it had a fun but accurate sound signature, was infinitely more comfortable and made from more premium materials. And it only cost me £120.

The dude who owns Lawton Audio came up with this idea as well

I think thats him anyway. But yeah if i want a closed Sennheiser the hd250 is the obv choice. Amazinggg beautiful sound,

In regards to the sub bass of the hd 600, the closest I came to “fixing it” (that is if one considers it broken to begin with) was pairing it with a balanced cavalli liquid carbon x. The bass did come up quite a bit to the point that it felt a little more thumping. But I ended up returning the amp because it isn’t clean enough and makes lots of noise when turning the volume nob.
