But the HD820 doesn't have the overall universality of the S2. You probably saw my very temporary listing for the my S2, woke up this morning and thought what a silly thing to do.
Yeah, I did see it and was a little surprised. But if it's not for you, it's not for you.
I have moved Many headphones on over the years. Luckily, the keepers now far outweigh the ones moving on.

I'm trying to limit the phones on hand to 2 or 3....3 or 4...I have 2 main listening stations and convinced myself that one open and closed for each is ok...but I might be losing. :slight_frown:
I have been trying to limit myself to a goal of just six: Four open and two closed. Sounded logical to me, but it's not going well.

Told my wife I might just keep what I have, amps and 'phones and just not buy anything else.
She literally laughed in my face! And this is the woman that goes off over EVERY audio purchase that hits the front door.
It's like she doubts my resolve!

If I had to keep one headphone between HD650, HD660s2 and HD800s, I would pick the HD660s2. It is the headphone that I was always looking for, very good comfort/weight, not bright, frontal mids, and subbass presence (its funny because my first sennheiser was HD238 and had subbass presence that my next upgrades didnt had like HD598 and HD650 which made me buy the Sundaras but hated the comfort and build quality of it). Sundara is sold, next HD650.

Fool I maybe. But I'm still happy with my hd660s. Which iv had a few months now in second hand mint condition for about. £215. And fitted a custom cable. £25. Playing mainly from Fiio audio players No eq. And music files mainly , jazz fusion , jazz rock, albums . Or podcasts iv downloaded from podomatic in not the best quality. But all good to me . The. Hd660s is still a good headphone. When I feel like a change I just grad one of my 8. Grado or Focal elegia for closed listening. Maybe one day I'll get round to the S2 version. But I still have my. Hd580 and. 600.

I think its time to prove her wrong and oh who am I kidding that's why you belong with us. To borrow from Olive Garden, when you're hear, you're family.
(its funny because my first sennheiser was HD238
I haven't heard that name 'round these parts in ages! It was more or less a cushier PX 100, which I still am quite fond of.

It still works, but I had to replace the cable with a better one and I still have one HD239 in a box unopened. Its the headphone that got me into really appreciating headphones, back then it blew up my mind. At the time and at the cost of 70 euros, I thought I made a very expensive purchase, little did I knew.

I just tried to hear it amped for the first time, my god, the subbass is definitely there, treble is as dark as I remember, but it sounds so bloated and the vocals sound so off. I cant go back to it for sure. The HD660s2 for me is the direct final upgrade of HD238

Well, it has been a full week with the HD660S2’s. I was pretty disappointed the first day (last Friday), but that was for a few different reasons. The first was that I was still adjusting away from two straight weeks of the OG Focal Clear’s, which are super dynamic. Secondly I was pouring some rum down and looking to rock with some of my favourite rock music. Not really the specialty of any Sennheiser, IMO.
Not really fair on both counts.

I started Saturday off with jazz and then ran with every genre of music and every amp that I have. The S2’s have a nice clear sound and do most sounds very well. I do find them a bit bass light, but they do nicely with bass boost from my iFi and sound good on my Schiit Valhalla 2. They remind me very much of my HD660S’s that I sold about 15 months ago. I used to call those my palate cleansers. Liked them, but never loved them. I suspect these will be the same. I did regret selling them.

For jazz, these are great. Also great with pop and pop/rock. IMO, these would not work well with Hip-Hop or EDM, unless you used some EQ/bass boost.
Their super power seems to be neutrality.

In my collection:
  1. Grado GH2’s have amazing mids and above.
  2. iBasso SR2’s have great bass and mids.
  3. Focal Clear’s are truly W-shaped. Great bass, mids and treble.
  4. HiFiman HE6se V2’s with the iFi Pro iCAN (bass boost and 3D enabled) are the Clears on steroids.
I don’t find anything standing out with the HD660S2’s. Nice, complete sound. More might stand out in a month or two.
Should also mention that these are super easy to drive. I expected 300 Ohms to be tougher. I can’t get any amp out of low gain and even then I am at 9:00-10:00. But I am a quiet listener.
So far, my only minor complaint is a little bass light, but I expected that going in.
