I just got the HD650s for 275, but I just read this and am considering returning them for beats...

It's pretty difficult to argue with a word of that to be honest. Horses for courses. There are however many, many headphones in the Beats market that do the job way better.

They have arrived two days early!!!

Listening now on my laptop with Spotify Premium with the Dragonfly 1.2. I will post back after I have had a chance to listen properly but first impressions are good (no surprise there really)

One thing, I have the volume up 100% on the laptop with and without the Dragonfly and the sound is loud but I could easily listen to louder. The sound level is the same with and without the Dragonfly too? Does this mean the Dragonfly isn't good enough to drive these and I need a more powerful amp?

Yes. The Dragonfly isn't much of an 'amplifier' in terms of volume. The HD650 is a 300 ohm impedance headphone. It's not going to sound at its best without a dedicated amp.

Seeing the hd600/650s have been discussed on head-fi since for ever.......probably the most honest post I've seen on head-fi. : )

Iwas undecided for a week... HD600 or HD650... I still am. Got the HD650 and now am watching with remorse over various HD600 ads. I can get them on Ebay (Germany) fo about 160 USD (used). I will wait however, need to spend by limited and not so large budget on a proper deck and solid state amp (or combo).

The discussions...pros and cons between the two and which one is better will go on forever.....but IMHO you're better off with the current 650s or HD6XXs, I really feel they have the better drivers and an upgrade over the 600s.

+1

the 650 is a great choice, I'd keep that one over the HD600 if I had to choose but I don't have to hehe

I can't listen at 100% with my DF 1.2 and 650.  It's way too loud.  The DF is much louder than my laptop built-in sound, and my laptop sound is above average.

Either my DF is different than yours, your settings somewhere are not optimal, or you just like to listen very, very loudly.  Make sure your Spotify player volume is always at max, and then adjust the windows system volume with keyboard or dedicated volume controls.  Are you using the Spotify desktop client, or listening through the web player?
