Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread

Well I know I am set on the amp side of things lol. I am considering an EC 2A3 or S7 so I can use it for a future speaker setup, and of course as an alternate headphone amp. Unfortunately impressions are pretty scarce when it comes to EC amps for speakers. I'd probably be looking to get some Decware high efficiency speaks to go with it-haven't really done my research on that yet though.

Your feedback on the Zeus cable makes me want to pick it over the black dragon, but at the same time; after visiting the official web page I don't know what to say... There are no pictures of the cables themselves (not that I can find), navigation isn't great and everything looks dated.

If aphrodite wants to run a good business, I recommend he updates his site and posts pics. I'm not quite sold frankly

This is constructive criticism. I'm sure the cables would sell better if info on it is accessible with ease.

I didn't have trouble finding the pricing lol. Is the higher price justifiable over a black dragon?..

I think that is a personal choice depending the value you put into how you want your sound. To my it clearly was.

I recently listened to these for the first time at ChiUniFi '12. My favorite sound with them was using the Ray Samuels DarkStar amp. It was a fantastic pair.

After hearing them I had to have a pair so I bought one that should arrive soon!

Just thought I'd drop by to let you know about my latest addition to my HD 800 rig.

Since coming back from my holiday where I didn't have my full-size headphones, I have been finding my HD 800 - even with the aftermarket cable and Amarra Hifi software - to be too bright for fatigue-free enjoyment and have put it back in the box in favour of enjoyably using my HD 600, which I've fallen in love with again.

However, a few days ago I had the idea to use my old hifi amp to power the HD 800. It's an Arcam Alpha 7. It doesn't provide great treble extension and it adds a touch of warmth to bass frequencies, but with the HD 800 plugged in to it, fed from my Lavry DA10 - albeit with small reduction of the Arcam's treble - recordings fed through the HD 800 are still laid bare, but the treble is no longer harsh and piercing, and rock recordings no longer sound anemic and unnatural. I'm really glad to have discovered this no-cost (for me) tweak to my headphone rig and it's making using the HD 800 much more enjoyable.

However, part of me still prefers the HD 600 - even though they're no match for the HD 800 in many ways technically - for their versatility and steadfastness as headphones that create a great sound with pretty much any recording. Either way, kudos to Sennheiser!

Dallan: Thanks for the ZDSE/HD 800 help. Changing the stock driver to a NOS round/black Tung Sol seems to be doing the trick-and the burn in I suppose. I was FLOORED for the first time by the Senns after almost 2 months of ownership. This ZDSE is definitely taking the Senn to another level altogether that my Dynalo couldn't. Can't wait to see what more burn in and perhaps a Brimar/Valvo might bring to the table...I'll be ordering the cable after that is set and done.

Glad to hear it.  Once you hear the next level from the HD800 it really is something else.  It also helps to put various comments into perspective.  I've had similar results and have yet to hear any SS amp take the 800s to that next level.  Tubes are no guarantee to do that either and can often go the other direction IMHO.

Yep-after hearing them from the Zana I took my for sale add down! After hearing both the TTVJ Fet-A and Dynalo (both highly recommended for the HD800s btw), I was still ready to sell the Senns. They were just to lacking in many areas, and the treble peak and brittleness had me aching for my T1s again. Actually that will probably be my next purchase-another T1 and AD2000 (both my fprmer top 2 cans) just to see where exactly the Zana can take them. Good times ahead, and already thinking of the 2A3 for a future speaker setup!

Hmmm.
Just got my HD800 today =)
Very happy with them, even from my Fiio e17.
They weren't as hard to drive as I thought.
It seems that they need about as much (or maybe a bit more) power than the AKG Q701 to get the same listening levels?
Unless my ears are mistaken...

Also one question, I read in the manual that I can find my own frequency response chart for my specific model on the site but I'm having trouble locating a link. Is it still available?

Glitched, the best is to just google search "sennheiser frequency chart" and the official webpage should pop up as one of the first results. What's your S.N btw?

Amping is not really about listening levels.  Better amping helps create a fuller sound, and especially with the HD800... imo of course.
