Sennheiser HD800 S Impressions Thread (read first post for summary)

Does anyone have any tips for a good 4.4mm balanced cable for the HD800S? I've only found no name brands on eBay for around $150.

Sennheiser announced the CH 800P cable last Spring, and was supposed to be released with the HDV820, but no word about it since: https://en-us.sennheiser.com/ch-800-p

It comes stock with one, however IMO a good upgraded one is the Cardas Clear. It's expensive though:

EDIT, sorry, you meant 4.4mm, not 4pin XLR :dt880smile:

I actually looked to see if Cardas made a 4.4mm version, but they don't sadly. I use a Kimber Cable for 4.4mm on my Z1Rs, I wish they offered a version for the HD800S.

Yeah, 4.4mm balanced is still really new. May be a bit different to find.

Funny thing is... Absolutely no 1 was hearing or talking talking about distorsion, until Tyll pointed that out.
After Tyll review everyone was starting to hear it. Isn't this funny?
I purchased the HD-800S after owning the HD-800 for around five years. One of the first things I noticed was the difference in bass presentation. The bass of the HD-800S had more presence than that of the HD-800 but less definition, this was some time before Tyll released his review of the HD-800S. At the time, I assumed it was due not to any real form of distortion but Sennheisers effort to make the HD-800S more musical on a wider variety of upstream gear. Regardless, I believe the bass of the HD-800S makes it far more versatile than it's older sibling.

800S bass is warmer and more organic compared to 800. If they didn’t do it with the help of THD, curious how they did it.

They used a method similar to the Anaxilus mod. They called it "absorber" technology that was first used in the IE800's.

Less bass + more highs is always clearer, faster more detailed bass, + Spike in highs not only make high more detailed, but also bass better.
You guys understand why a lot of manufactures make V shaped fr. It because boosted highs can make up for big bass negative effects. Think Th610 vs Th900
You can try to eq any headphones bass and bass becomes slower, then eq highs and sound became faster and clearer again.
"Fatter sound is slower less clean sound"
HD800S is little fatter, touch meatier sound than HD800 So it all makes sense.

The hd800S bass is worse than hd800 and it can't take bass eq so well, so what is the point of those measurements if in comparison the bass in 800S sound murkier than hd800?

I agree. The bass on the HD800S is murkier and less defined than the regular old HD800, and doesn't take eq as well.
The bass is definitely tighter and better defined on the regular HD800, to my ears.

I don't understand sound graphs...I read a review by a very respected 'audiophile'...who said effectively the HP's he was reviewing were garbage. I have these very HP's running through a QP1R and Hugo2. I've never heard my music sound so good through these cans that (from his graphs) are supposed to sound like garbage?

Enjoy it, appreciate it, trust your ears, this is a subjective hobby

You could check out Forzaaudioworks.com a Polish company. They are just making a Z1R cable for me. I took the Noir Hybrid 1.5 m Pentagon. 260€ to Germany.
