Sennheiser IE900 Review, Measurements, & Harman Target Talk

Has anyone heard of both ie600 and ie900? Is there an audible difference between them?
Yes I have and they carry different presentation not that one is better than the other. The ie600 is a little warmer and has meat to the leanness of ie900 presentation. It also has more air freq so feels faster in transients in comparison to ie900. Where as ie900 has deeper bass and is a little more spacious. I would say that ie900 is a specialist of music that doesn’t have a whole lot of hefty low end like classical. Whereas ie600 is more of an all rounder.

On physical side ie900 feels a lot more smoother in the ear whereas ie600 has a grainer texture which for a few early days of usage feel problematic but after a few days you won’t notice it. The tip side of ie600 is also sharper and can hurt at times if the eartip is not covering it, but once it is set, the comfort is the same on both.

ie900 is very expensive. There is already a lot of competition in the market. How good is it in terms of price-value? $1,400 for 1 7mm dynamic driver? Somehow I feel that a lot of money is paid for the Sennheiser brand.

Price-value is always a tough one. It doesn’t bother me a whole lot if I get a chance to audition first. So try before you can make a decision. The driver is small but it is irrelevant because it pushes sound to a Helmholtz resonator which eventually filter the sound out of a vent then filtered further by a dampening material and the waveguide in the eartip itself. So I say that is a lot of work in the engineering department.

Sound output is very clean for both ie600 and ie900. Imaging is excellent on both but none can give give the grand scale of a larger driver. Dita perpetua comes to mind.

You should be able to secure a deal at present at most of the stores. Sub 1000 usd for ie900 and sub 500 for ie600 are good value for both.

The only deciding factor is what presentation you like.

I recently bought a pair of Sennheiser IE 900 IEMs from my local CEX for £700. I haven’t tested them yet but I’m a bit baffled by the contents in the box. I have been watching all the unboxing videos on YouTube and the photos posted on this forum and the IE900 case looks dark grey. However, the case that comes in the box I bought is a copper brown colour. However, it looks like the IE900 IEMs aren’t fake as there is a certificate in the box proving that they are the real deal.

I was wondering if there were some models of the IE900 that came with a copper brown case?

I don't know about the case, but I do know that the fakes came with a fake certificate as well.

That has got me very worried. The case in the photos is the same case I got with the IE900. However, the seller’s 6 digit serial number is 12xxx from 1 April 2021 yet the 6 digit number on my IE900 certificate and case is 03xxx and from the same date 1 April 2021 (April fools indeed). The signature on my certificate look different to the signature in the seller’s certificate.

The only thing that hit the alarm bells that it could be a fake I’ve got is the case being a different colour to the cases I’ve seen on unboxing videos.

The ties on the cables look more professional on my IE900 as they are Velcro ties. The cable ties on the seller’s are just basic thin plastic wires.

Another thing to mention is that the 6 digit serial numbers on the certificate and case of my IE900 don’t match the serial number on the outer package which is a 10 digit serial number.

As for the sound quality they are not bad but it’s basically the same sound quality as on my £30 Sennheiser CX300 which is also making me wonder if the IE900 are fakes.

I would take the back to CEX and explain but I fear they will not believe me.

I'm afraid I can't tell you for sure, maybe others can chime in on serial numbers and dates. I would personally return them if at all possible.

I’m afraid CEX will refuse to refund me but I have contacted Sennheiser support about this matter and I will mention that I have contacted Sennheiser to CEX when I take them back. The sound quality is pretty good but it isn’t amazing good to justify the £700 price tag.

FWIIW If you do a search - I use Bing and look at images - most are shown with a brown/copper case for the ie900 even the early review pages show a brownish coloured case - https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sennheiser-ie900-review-measurements-harman-target-talk.957709/ - as an example, and even if photos used in reviews are from elsewhere, they're more likely to be press photos from Sennheiser if an early review than from fake manufacturers. My case is the brown/copper colour the serial on the bottom of the case is the same as that written on the certificate and its dated JUNI 2021 - I purchased 2nd hand so maybe mine aren't genuine as well.

Yeah, it's a real bummer that the fakes are so prevalent for both the IE900 and IE600. It doesn't help resale value either as people that are aware of the fakes are never 100% sure and likely avoid them on the used market...

Someone on eBay are selling Sennheiser IE 900 IEMs and they are based in Japan. I took screenshots of the photos as the box contents are absolutely identical to the box contents I’ve got. One thing that has shocked me is that the Order number/ref number 508949 on the rear of the outer box is identical to the order/ref number in my box. Another thing that’s baffled me is that on the case under the serial number it says “Made in Germany” when I read on the Sennheiser site that they are made in Ireland.

The initial batch was made in Germany but the rest afterwards were made in Ireland. The one I have is made in Ireland . I read you mentioned you got it touch with Sennheiser, what do they have to say about all this?

I haven’t heard back from Sennheiser yet but if you say the initial batch were made in Germany then it’s got me thinking that maybe the initial batch that were made in Germany came with the copper/brown case.

When I hear back from Sennheiser I’ll let you know.

I asked a friend of mine to send a pic of his ie900. He has the earlier version made in Germany and it indeed is brown but not as brown as in the pics you shared.
