Shanling H5 - Portable DAC/AMP/Player, AKM AK4493S DACs and sweet warm tuning

A comparison between Shanling H5 x Topping G5, in my opinion:

The difference in sound isn't drastically different, not to the point of weighing it down in an assessment.
Well, you have to make an effort to notice these meticulous sounds; G5 in absolute sharpness and beautiful transparency, H5 in a slightly "warmer" sound (a little more presence in the mid-bass and attenuation in the mid-high - but something very punctual, it's not exactly like equalizing).

Is this transparency superior in the G5? Yes, I can say that it is a device molded more in high definition, perhaps objectively better sound.

Not only that, but notably higher and more refined amplification (in technical aspects as well).

But I think that doesn't bring down the Shanling H5 as a whole: it's slightly more musical and less clinical, it brings a little more fun (in that little extra heat).

Its amplification capability is already good enough for IEMs... 840mw into 32ohms on the balanced 4.4mm output. It has three types of gains and I believe high impedance output (the G5 is technically fabulous in this parameter) from Shanling will only affect REALLY sensitive IEMs.

Shanling is simply more complete as a product because it has a basic screen (with information about battery level, volume, modes and some practical settings); and for being able to be a Media Player - although the Eddit Player application makes things more intuitive - being able to pause, play, advance and rewind a track. Yes, the fact that Shanling has a good mobile application that synchronizes without many bugs with the device already makes it highly interesting - less raw than Topping's product, even if the proposal is different.
Great review. How did the higher impedance affect your gear and listening experience?

So my friend, from IEMs I only have a Sennheiser IE200 and a Tripowin Olina - the IE200 has a lower impedance between the two, 18ohms.

I honestly didn't feel any background noise on any of the outputs using Sennheiser, and on any of the three amp gains. It's similar to the Topping G5 in that respect, only with a SLIGHTLY warmer, less transparent approach to sound ("Saber sound").

But I can't guarantee you with really sensitive IEMs (Campfire Andromeda or Softears RSV, for example). Maybe there could be some effect...

For me it is an excellent product. Very robust and full of cool functions.

It's not about sensitivity, but about their impedance curve.

Hello. I received Shanling H5. I don't understand how filters work. H5 is connected to a smartphone via usb, direct access is provided. I listen through headphones connected to the H5. When changing "gain" there is a change in the strength of the sound. When changing digital filters, there is no change in the sound, is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong...

Change in digital filters is more subtle, some people simply don't notice it that much.

Thank you for your reply. Are there any firmware updates for the Shanling H5 coming soon?

We prepare firmware updates as they come. H5 was just released, so will see.

Salem, any thoughts about its sound?

The H5 has a more enveloping, warmer sound with more bass and midrange, without harsh highs. Topping G5 (I compare with it, since I have it) is noticeably sharper and less emotional in the presentation of music. But this is my opinion and my hearing, it may not coincide with the conclusions of another person.

Technically, is it on the same level as Topping G5?

They are both good. H5 and G5 have a different approach to sound delivery. G5 is dry and more detailed, technical. H5 rich, natural, more lively and natural.

That's it. I have both and my sound impressions are similar to yours.

Both great equipment, the G5 can be considered more resolute and the H5 more musical; however, the Shanling carries more features that make it an excellent choice!

Hi, speaking of H7, you mentioned that the battery is the standard 18650. Is it the same with H5? Can it be replaced?
