Hmm. Makes me feel like I'm going to end up wanted the 1Z also!

Don't forget that 90-95% of that specific warmer sound is a product of software, so who knows :)

I plan to change the region immediately when it arrives and listen stock for about a week before loading your firmware, just to properly compare.

That is very true, I only ever heard vanilla on both, and how massively the WM1A has changed for the better...

Well I'll know soon enough anyway, after my failed attempt via Amazon UK when it never actually shipped, on its way from Amazon Spain...

I'm on A50Z, region CN (give me the resolution!!!) :).

Coming from A50R FE, it's like having a different DAP.

Classic mode gives punchy bass, crispy high :).

Then, Plus mode tames everything down, into a coherent, relaxing, musical pure bliss :).

Thanks so much to @MrWalkman :).

Yup, it is quite the upgrade - if only Sony knew what was in their hands - either they're clever with the hardware but lazy with the firmware - or, they're purposely nobbling their firmware down to aim at price points rather than up to a value proposition.

Well I'm just grateful that these tweaks are possible when the right hands and minds are applied to them :)

Currently having fun testing something else for the WM1A/Z, though I should sleep

More info to come.

I'd be very interested in giving that a go :)

It's not yet available for the ZX300.

In the meanwhile, the battery charging image when the battery is too low for the player to start:
