Has anybody tried this combo, or do the 009's really need an amp specifically designed with electrostatics in mind. I assume this is not a particularly popular combo as my search did not come up with anything.
 
Loving my HD800/BHA combo but getting curious about the 009's.

You need an electrostatic amp for the 009s. Stax aren't regular headphones.

Kinda what I thought, thanks. Been a Hifi'er for years but am very new to the headphone thing. I guess they must have multiple pins (inputs) to provide a charge to the panel and stators.

You could use your Bryston power amp (Edit - not the BHA-1, the power amp in your stack) with a transformer (such as the Stax SRD-7 or Woo Audio WEE).

There is not nearly enough voltage on tap to drive those transformers.  The cap coupled output will also cause problems.
