I recently had a thread like this... but it crashed and died, so im trying to make a new one to actually get some opinions.
I honestly listen to Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Dub Step, and Rap.
I like a prominent base and an overall clear sound.

Now all i usually hear is that the ATH-M50 is the best, is this true?

I do not want to spend hard earned money for a pair that is not worth it.

So tell me. what would you get, and why?

Probably because there is at least five of these threads daily and some of them just get burrowed under piles of new posts...

that's why the recommendation thread exists, to keep things less cluttered :p

The M50s are good headphones but most Headfi'ers agree it's nowhere as good as they are hyped to be, certainly not if you're looking for a bass emphasis.

I would try the Ultrasone HFI-580, Beyerdynamic DT770/80, or the Custom One Pro's... they're all above your budget at the moment but I've seen them for $150 several times in the past couple months.

I would not buy the m50. The Beyerdynamic Custome One should be very good.

Good choices there.

Don't forget the Sony MDR-7506 or the Sennheiser HD-280. Both underrated and in the $100 range. I have a pair of 7506's, but I think the HD-280's sound a bit better and are a bit more comfortable as well.

If you want impact, go for the M50, if you want better imaging and controlled bass go for the 780's or 7506's, if you want more isolation I'd go for the 280's.

In terms of comfort, the M50's are likely the most comfortable as well. 780's and 280's have high clamping force and 7506's are fine, just not the most comforting out ouf the group.

Taylor when you say impact, what exactly do you mean?

impact generally refers to the bass slam. cause closed headphones generally have more bass slam than the open headphone's more surround bass feel. (exceptions apply)
