The Astell and Kern AK240 Impressions Thread

Very brief impressions comparing the two:
- fuller sound across the FR / less airy spacious than stock
- more pronounced bass / slight less flat neutral than stock

Subjectively I find it sounds very pleasing and the slight change in the sound is definitely to my taste. I would probably have opted for the rwak if I don't have the stock unit already. However the difference is not big enough for me to send mine in for the mod.

(disclaimer: impressions with 1p2 and jh13fp on dsf tracks , the rwak240 was very new, the environment is quite noisy)

Not my cup of tea then, glad I didn't send it to get it modified.

Lol funny that "the American way" was an analogy Kiats actually brought up during our gathering!

I only once, in my entire hi-fi journey that my system equipped with American components... and that was Audio Research (pre amp) and Krell (power amp).  Since they paired with the Sonus Faber speakers and the result was acceptable musical.  I've told Gavin that the RWAK would likely heading the same direction last week before he had a chance to audition a RWAK and confirmed my guess.

Personally I think the stock AK performs flawlessly on the lower spectrum (with my Ref.1) and no such need to mod IMHO.

u r absolutely right, those who say 240 is not as good as their 901 r usually the the ones who compare a six-month old 901 to a brand new 240, if u keep using ur240for a month or two, even if u use hifiman re600 unbalanced, it still sounds better than 901

Thanks for the reply but could you please clarify this post because here it looks like it's me talking, and it's clearly not.

Hold on just a bit longer, guys. The RWAK was at less than 100hrs at the time. Currently at 200+ hrs, air is much improved so is bass control. Will love to do some comparison with stock unit again when the RWAK hits the 250 to 300 hr mark.

So far it sounds really good with the NT6. A bit lacking emotion at first vs. the 901, but it seems to get better. It is more airy and spacious than the 901 but less body to the sound.

i have never used NT6 before, i was only making a comparison between 901 and 240 when using hifimanz own flagship iem. the sound gets opened up as u use ur 240 more, to me, the highs r especially impressive. but speaking of other iems, including k3003 and ie800, 901 just sounds terrible.
so its not even fair.to compare. not even when ur 240 is still brand new. he500, another pair of hifimanz headphones, dont sound that good at the beginning, but with one month's burn-in. it sounds significantlybetter than 901,.at least to me

How many of you are currently using this mod on the 240?

Is it worth it? I'm looking to use just the AK240 with no portable amp with the Shure SE846. Will the RWAK240 end the need for any sort of portable amp?

Well as mentioned the rwak240 was almost like brand new so do take my brief impressions with a huge grain of salt. Personally I have not been too keen on rwak mods but I have to say compared to rwak100/120 I do feel the rwak240 mod is more worthwhile.
