The Sony 40th Anniversary Walkman Thread
Nov 15, 2019 at 10:08 AM Post #826 of 3,003
As most of my listening has transitioned to Tidal I decided the NW A105 seemed like a solid upgrade to my A45. Was considering a Hiby but got my first walkman in 1988 with a few models since then including jumping on the Minidisc bandwagon - still a fan of the Sony. (A few iPods here and there).

TL;DR - wasn't sure how to get my 105 in South Africa but am in the USA this week for business. Ordered a blue 105 from Amazon UK on Monday morning when it launched by Wednesday it was delivered by UPS to San Diego, waiting for me with family - will get it later today.

Best part - no VAT from Amazon UK, price came to GBP 266 ! And no duties to the USA ! Bargain :)

First impressions to follow. Hoping for 8 hours of battery life with Tidal streaming / offline. Will be pairing with Sony WH-1000XM3's for a portable LDAC solution.

For that price it’s worth taking the chance.

I’ll do some side by side comparisons with my 45 which is volume limit unlocked.

I paid 313 dollars on Ebay, I got 10% off.

I got mine uncapped from Japan to UK for £236.19 (avoided duties/fees too). Anybody beat that price ?

No music tonight. When its downloaded I'll be off playing STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order™ on my gaming PC  (Released today). Will turn the sub up! Will also see how it sounds with my Audeze Mobius in 7.1 head tracking mode.

İs there a way to unlock the 45 or it was a non EU Unit?

Think you can unlock all the non Android ones (A30,A40,A50,ZX300 etc.) by installing unlocked region firmware. I unlocked my UK ZX300 and only bought from UK after I found out I could uncap it.

I just thought about a possible way to unlock the a105. As the bootloader probably verifies the signature of the firmware only with a sony key it might be possible to install an unlocked firmware as whole instead modifying the installed one. To do this, however, it is necessary to find a way to obtain the firmware. This was always possible with Sony phones, e.g. you could install EU firmwares on US devices and got the fingerprint reader working.

Maybe when a new firmware update. No idea why they cap DAP's that are already low powered. Daft.

Think the EU directive only talks about volume limits when supplied with earphones which most Sony DAP's don't come with. Its a nonsense unless you know what's being plugged into it!

I nearly exploded my head when I once accidently set the Mojo into line-out mode with my SE846's in my ears. :triportsad: Extremely dangerous!

Why not, free trial for 3 months. Max you will get on the A105 is 24/48 due to Android limits but still great (do get full 24/192 with Hiby R5 but still prefer A105)

I noticed when I checked my order they took 10% off and the tax seems to have been dropped. So I hope the guys ships it 313 is cheap :)
