I currently have a sennheiser HD555 and they work pretty bell, but have almost no bass without the use of an equalizer. I pretty much only use the headphones with my desktop PC, which uses a creative audigy 2 ZS.
I am currently interested in the Audio Technica M50 but I am unable to find much information on repairing them (I generally want to at least be able to replace the audio cables and ear pads.
The AKG k 240 seems to have a good amount of repairability, and cost $83 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001ARCFA
but for the Audio-Technica ATH-M50S seems to offer better quality for a few dollars more, $103 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004ZG9TMA
only issue is that it doesn't look like it will be easy to repair, especially the audio cable. I am not a bass head, but I like having a good balance of bass, mids, and highs. without any adjustment, the HD555 pretty much sound lifeless in certain songs and movies as areas where you know there is some bass, or even a rumble, the hd555's will barely produce them unless you mess with the equalizer. For example, listen to the song Unholy Trinity by epica, and many of the bass instruments, have pretty much none of the bass that you would hear in real life until you increase the bass in the EQ. While some of my other headphones, reproduce the sounds of those instruments accurately with no adjustment (eg the sony MDR-xd400 (though it struggles with many of the other frequencies)
(my budget is about $150, not much in terms of getting really quality headphones, but I would like to get a meaningful upgrade from the HD555 if possible)
