Like so many, I sometimes watch movies with headphones on. To keep family peace while everyone else is sleeping and so on. That usually mandates a longer cable, like 5 meters. Now, the question ... if you are really into good cabling in the 3-4 digit class, which is the better option if you will anyway buy a music listening cable at about 2m (ish):
  1. A separate long (5m) cable for headphone home cinema? Thus buying a 2m and a 5m cable.
  2. An extension (3m) to the music listening cable? Thus buying a 2m and a 3m cable.
The minus to #1 is cost, and it might mean a lesser quality of cable to be able to afford it. The minus to #2 ... I am not so sure about, but you guys probably have experience to tell: Does the connector in the middle of the 2+3 make for a significant loss as opposed to a straight 5m cable?

To make it realistic, let's say the above choices have to fit inside a meagre budget of $1500 for the entire cable bundle, connectors and all included.
