Too many to choose from. Closed headphones for movies.

Thanks for the info.

That's one of the virtues of the 595, however, there are those who report that "well amped" the 595s improve and there seems to be a lot of people suggesting that tube amps are the way to go. I suspect that the differences will only ever be pretty marginal and a better source is probably the best way to make them sound better. Certainly, using an Arcam Alpha 7 CD player amped using the Xenos, sounds noticeably better than using a Vibez as the source (amped or unamped). Also, sadly, increasing the volume dramatically improves the sound, but out of respect for my hearing I try to resist that urge

I was set of DT770/80's, but now I'm thinking they'd sound like crap plugged into the source I'm going to be using mostly. The headphone jack on my 21" CRT TV. The other source (for about 5% of the use) is an M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card.

I'm now, torn between A700's and DT770's. A700's for the fact they're as comfortable as the DT770's and that they can be plugged into any source and still sound good.

This is too difficult. :[

Buy the AD700's over the A700's. Unless you really, really, really prefer closed phones?

It depends how much better the AD700's are over the A700's.

AD700's are extremely cheap, $109 from audiocubes. Do they really sound that much better than the A700's? Remember, these will be used for movies and plugged into an old TV's headphone jack (unless there's a better way to use my DVD player as the source).

I guess you should decide based on your own preferences. Do you want more soundstage (AD700) or less soundstage and more bass (A700)?

I've just read this review:

http://www.headphones.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10

And they do look very promising. I liked the comparison between the AD's and the HD595's. Good stuff.

I think you might have swayed me. It's an awkward situation though. A700's will provide better isolation, thus better for movies. But the AD700's will provide better sound quality, thus better for movies.

Even when down to open vs closed, this is still too hard.

Oh btw - how does soundstage affect movies? I know it helps in gaming a lot.

Ever played Halo 2 on Legendary before?

I'm guessing the same effects would hold true for action movies as well. Sound of bullets and grenades all around you, etc.

Sorta like having a 3d surround system in a pair of phones. Sound effects/vocals in different 'planes' and you're in the middle of it. Something to experience really. Of course the effects would probably be maximized if certain parts in a movie have natural soundstage. (Intense action scenes, street scenes, crowds, etc)

Oh yeah, I've played Halo on legendary.

I used to play that game all day online. I was very good at it.

In fact, my brother still plays it online. He's regarded as one of the best UK players. So the headphones I choose he'll actually take to LAN's with him.

Senn's lack punch imo, having tested a couple yesterday. I say their phones have a laid-back, relaxed sound in them that might not be suitable for movies...and plus, you're a guy, I expect that you'll be watching action movies for the most part.

for movies, you should look for something that has a good bass. you may not enjoy watching The Matrix with the Senns but probably with some other bass-y phones (like what DT700 might offer you).

Yeah I do like action movies.

Well I really want the DT770/80's. They've been my #1 choice for a while now. But I'm afraid they will sound like crap plugged straight into my TV. I also won't be getting an amp (unless the PA2v2 is worth it), so I can't really fully use them.
